Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline Wilson.
Jacqueline, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Originally from Nebraska. I am a small town girl that always had a city heart. I am from an extremely small town in the middle of good ole Nebraska. After graduating high school, I decided to join the military and shipped off to basic training for the army at 18 and no idea what I’d gotten myself into. While stationed at Fort Leonard wood I met my amazing husband, Jerrick. We did the long distance thing for a while and got crazy and married.
After a few months of marriage, we decided to move to the DFW. Best decision ever! We have been in Fort Worth for about four years now, and I absolutely love it. I always knew I wanted to be a hairstylist but never pursued it back home. When I moved here, I realized the doors of opportunity that were just waiting. I enrolled in school and began just after eight weeks of having my amazing little girl!
I finished school and quickly began my career at salon dexterity! I absolutely love what I do and my amazing clients who allow me to do what I love. My amazing coworkers make for a good time as well! I am a Redken specialist, Redken certified colorist and specialize in curly hair. I love doing any and everything while I’m behind the chair. If it’s not challenging me, it’s not changing me.
In the few years that I’ve been able to truly pursue my passion, I’ve quickly realized that if it scares me, then I need to step up and do it. My favorite thing about being a stylist is making everyone that sits in my chair feel amazing, give them an experience they won’t forget and a style they love! I am a mom, wife, hairstylist and I loveeeee every minute of it!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all! I wish! One of my biggest challenges was the sacrifice of time I knew I would never get back. Well worth the sacrifice but so hard. While in school full time I also worked overnights full time and did so for a little under two years. After finishing school, I was working full time at the salon and would go straight to my second job after, get ready there to go back to the salon.
That had to be some of the hardest and most exhausting time of my life. I thankfully had an army behind me and family who helped with my now three-year-old along the way. I’ve also realized that to care for others, you have to take time to care for yourself.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Stylist at Salón Dexterity story. Tell us more about the business.
I work Salon Dexterity, an amazing salon company. I love what I do and where I do it. I have been there for a little over two years now and could not have picked a better place for myself. I specialize in curly hair, color, and educating! I love to educate my clients and some of our new stylists.
As the salon educator, I mentor our newest stylist and help them understand how to build their business and how to be successful. I am super proud of the salon company for being voted by the readers of the Fort Worth magazine and best salon in Fort Worth for 2018. Also for myself this year I was able to become a certified hair colorist through Redken, and I was also able to double my business in just one year. I am blessed!
I definitely believe that what sets me apart is the hard work that I put into understanding the needs of all my clients. I love to sit down and truly try to capture what their needs and wants are. I love to educate them through the process and have a great time doing it. If my clients had any say, they would probably say my laugh is what sets me apart because I love to laugh!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t really believe in luck. I think that luck doesn’t do much for anyone. It’s hard work, determination, and doing what others aren’t willing to do that will make a difference in your life.
