Today we’d like to introduce you to Jalea Seals.
Jalea, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a counselor, I earned my stripes in a psychiatric hospital for children. I would help children with extreme behavior issues, usually stemming from some major trauma. I would have the kids in my group for 4-6 weeks and most of the time they got better. Psychologically, I knew what they needed in their environment to help them be successful.
But the big problem I kept running into was that the parents didn’t go to school for counseling and did not have the same experience myself and my fellow therapist had so they would struggle with their children when they went back home.
I saw a huge gap in mental health care and in that gap, I saw an opportunity to use my skillsets to teach parents how to help their own children through behavior problems. In no time a few top behavioral therapists in the area to join 212 Behavioral’s team and mission and we have been rolling ever since!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh man, in my experience no roads are smooth unless you take the time to make them that way! The biggest hurdle we faced was due to introducing a new product into the market. People didn’t know how to categorize us. We had to put a lot of time in talking to our referral base answering a lot questions about who we aren’t in order for people to understand who we are.
212 Behavioral – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We provide in-home parenting support for parents who have kids with behavior problems. Often, we help parents whose child is aggressive at home, does not follow directions, is cripplingly anxious and the parents don’t know what else to do. We help parents who have tried everything and are not getting results. We see ourselves as a step more intensive than once a week counseling and a step-less intensive than hospitalization.
We are 100% parent-focused. We go to your home, to learn what your day to day is like. We listen to you and then enter into your story to empower you with the skills to help squash problem behaviors. We help your routine. We teach you what goals are realistic, what words to use, what consequences will work best for your household. We are the only company that offers 100% parent-focused in-home support in DFW.
Co-parenting plans is another popular and unique thing we offer. We are all about how to make your child successful. Parents who are divorced or separated have to be on the same page when it comes to their child. We sit down with each parent and figure out their goals for their child and come up with a co-parenting plan that will be used for both households. It is a huge need and no one else is doing it like us.
What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
The other therapists always say their favorite thing in the world is seeing a child who is proud of themselves. For me, the proudest moment of my career is following up with parents and seeing that they are proud of themselves. They came to 212 defeated and feeling like a failure of a mom/dad and to hear them a month later feeling proud of themselves, their parenting and the relationship they are building with their child makes me so proud of what we are doing here.
