Meet Jalonni Weaver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jalonni Weaver.

Hi Jalonni, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started back in high school taking just-for-fun Tumblr photos. I went to college and discovered my passion for photography. During my time at Stephen F. Austin State University, I was the only black woman in the photography program. I mainly focused on capturing the beauty of black women and men, and I became known as “Lonni The Photographer”. I worked for the university newspaper and also photographed events. I was most known for graduation photos. I also partnered with Forever 21 for an advertisement, in 2017, I earned a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts with a focus in Photography.

After college, I had a difficult time finding a job that was related to my degree, and I decided to enter a new industry while continuing to pursue my love of photography on the side. My friends were my models, and they helped enhance my photography skills. In summer 2021, I returned from my hiatus and decided to turn this hobby into a business.

Currently, I offer mini photoshoots, where I photograph families, couples, individuals, and professionals for holiday pictures, ‘just because” pictures and headshots. In 2022, my goal is to expand my portfolio to include more wedding photography. I would also like to host a day for professionals and provide professional headshots for a discounted price.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, there have been some bumps along the way, I wish someone would’ve told me how expensive it was to start an actual business. Nobody ever tells you how much you have to put out or how many events/shoots you have to do for free to build your brand. I’m learning how to establish professional boundaries and my niche in this competitive industry. Mentally and emotionally, I have struggled with imposter syndrome and feeling like my work doesn’t compare to more seasoned photographers. I’ve been persistent in my growth and built my portfolio up to reflect my skills and versatility.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a photographer/content creator. I specialize in wedding and portrait photography. I am known for photographing black women and capturing our beauty. I am most proud of my growth and increasing my presence on multiple social media platforms. My style of photography is more organic and highlights the natural beauty of the people in front of the lens.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I like the variety of the Dallas culture. There’s so much diversity and growth, and our city continues to develop. I least like the traffic and constant construction that is required to accommodate the growth lol 🙂
