Today we’d like to introduce you to James and Amy St Peter.
James and Amy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Have always loved ice cream and there was nowhere in the area to get it. There were places that were kind of close but they provided no atmosphere or ambiance. So we created Hypnotic Emporium with the thought this will be a place where people’s kids will eventually bring their kids.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part yes. However, this is our fourth business to open so the typical things that throw people off course; permitting, build out, rental agreements etc we knew what to expect so even though they threw a wrench in the system we expected it. Adjusting for winter seasonality has been the biggest adjustment.
Please tell us about Hypnotic Emporium.
We serve Beth Marie’s homemade ice cream out of Denton. The relationship came about because they are right down the street from our Denton store. I loved their ice cream so much one day I said “I need to bring this to Dallas”. We had a deal in place a day later. What we do that is unique to the Dallas scene.
We make our own sodas by mixing syrup with our soda arm
We are the first to bring the donut stuffed with ice cream to the area
We have a new item called the cloud cone. It is an ice cream cone hand wrapped with cotton candy on site
We offer multiple classic candies that are hard to find elsewhere
We have baked in house cookies for cookie ice cream sandwiches
We offer pie in the winter months
All of our co-workers are dressed to project our interior style of an old fashioned soda fountain.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Throwing the football out front with my dad.
