Meet James Delorean of Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Delorean

Hi James, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve worked in the entertainment industry for over a decade. I’ve wanted to be a TV writer my entire life, and I tried everything imaginable to break in – improv, standup, acting, made short films, wrote a musical, entered screenwriting contests. Nothing moved the needle.

Things changed when I took a job as an Office PA at Dean Devlin’s (INDEPENDENCE DAY, Prime Video’s LEVERAGE: REDEMPTION, SYFY’s THE ARK) production company. I quickly got promoted to Office Manager and used my salary to pay for countless writing classes. I wrote whenever I had time – honing my craft. I won over a lot of people by writing office wide emails in screenplay format. Instead of some boring welcome email for the new intern, it’d be a heartfelt scene about her father dropping her off at the train station and wishing her luck in Hollywood. Maybe it was kind of desperate but people got a kick out of it and it reminded them of my ultimate goal.

Ultimately, Dean and Jonathan Glassner took pity on me and offered me the Writers’ Assistant job on the first season of the SYFY show, THE ARK. It was a fantastic learning experience with a brilliant group of writers. I was fortunate enough to be asked back for Season 2, and they gave me a freelance script. My episode, “Cycle of Violence,” aired recently and the response was overwhelmingly positive. The online discourse about it has been really exciting and passionate.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Anybody who’s worked in entertainment knows challenges are pretty constant. Dealing with personalities, maintaining motivation, balancing a day job with creative aspirations, trying to stay healthy, remaining solvent. Taking chances without being irresponsible.

The biggest challenge for me has probably been maintaining focus on my ultimate goal of TV writing despite a
variety of unavoidable obligations. Those responsibilities would take me off track for a while and I’d have to remind myself of why I entered the entertainment industry in the first place. Then I’d refocus and get back to my writing routine.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a TV Writer and Writers’ Assistant, most recently for Season 2 of THE ARK (now available to stream on Peacock and the SYFY app).

Recently I’ve been focused on development. I’m drawn to character-driven stories that explore the relationship between nostalgia and trauma, and every individual’s potential for change.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I’m currently seeking representation and would love to write on a cool sci-fi show like SEVERANCE or DARK MATTER! You can support me by following me on social media. Feel free to reach out and say hello!
