Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamey Jamison.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jamey. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Through the years I have taught workshops for college, high school and community classes on subjects ranging from Acting, Make-up, stage combat, theatrical lighting, puppetry, art, drama, improv, and the list goes on!
After college and a few years touring with the ArtsPower National Touring Theatre and the Brooklyn Theatre Company, I landed in New Orleans where I spent time with Le Petit Theatre in New Orleans and then went on to work at various other artistic ventures. It was not until I moved to the Metroplex that I found my passion for teaching Children’s theatre and working with youth. I have been doing it ever since and have not looked back.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road to anyone’s passion is always wrought with struggles and obstacles along the way. I try and not dwell on those struggles. It is a combination of those struggles and my perseverance that have made me the man I am today. Had the road to this moment not been riddled with obstacles there is no way I would be where I am and I definitely would not appreciate all I have worked for nearly as much. So, are they really struggle in the long run? Or perhaps they are just lessons that I needed to learn and part of my journey.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Art Centre Theatre story. Tell us more about the business.
The Art Centre Theatre is a 501 (c) 3 Non-profit community theatre. We bring a plethora of shows well known and lesser known to the stage and allow those who normally wouldn’t have a chance to live their dream the opportunity. Not only do we have a very illustrious adult program, but it’s also the children who thrive from our classes and programs. We are one of the few community theatres who teach backstage skills as well as onstage. We make sure our program teaches everything from script breakdown, set build, tech and lighting to onstage training. We believe that in theatre there is a place for everyone whether it is onstage or backstage.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe in theatre luck (good and bad) always plays its part. Performance theatre has needed a good blend of luck and determination in order to happen. Even in business, it’s the happy accidents mixed with bad luck that can sometimes lead to the biggest successes. Luck, good and bad, is not something that you can prepare for and when combined with live theatre one either is apart of the biggest achievements and rewarding experiences or can use the bit of bad luck as a learning experience for how to better prepare for the next time.
