Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamila “Jiffy” Sherman.
Jamila “Jiffy”, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey in the entertainment industry began back in 2015. I started out assisting a music producer/childhood friend of mine named Ikory aka Magic. He owns a company named La$t Tribe. At the time, he and his brother were producing music, creating a clothing line and managing various artists which caused the need of assistance with promo and marketing. So Ikory asked me and I said “yea”. I was also earning my MBA at the time and I’vealways had a passion for the arts (I played piano for ten years) so I figured why not marry the two. I came on helping with the basics such as running the social media accounts, emailing outlets, etc. One particular artist we were working with was rapper Curtis Mayz. For him, I executed things such as his album listening party, creating his website, you know things like that. Over time he built a name for himself and in result ended up opening for Big K.R.I.T.
Next, things just sort of snowballed. I began offering consulting and management services to other artists and became an ambassador for the NYC-based brand named I Don’t Do Clubs. That gig pushed me more into the event realm overall. Over time I did ambassador roles for festivals with brands like Scoremore shows. Then from there I worked as a hospitality and stage manager for concerts and festivals with various artists such as Solange, Migos, Yella Beezy, Tyler, the Creator, Nine Inch Nails and others. With all of the connections and experience I gained, I rolled my promotion content from I Don’t Do Clubs under Jay Sage and built up my event advertising arm of my business. Today I serve as an entertainment consultant under Jay Sage Productions specializing in management services for events and creatives. My main goal this year is to execute my first fully produced concert so working towards that fingers crossed! I know the game now it’s just about aligning everything.
Has it been a smooth road?
I can’t name too many obstacles along the journey. If anything they have just made me become more aware of my true purpose and the purpose of my company. I mean yes there have been situations where business partnerships dissolved, certain doors closed, but nothing that has me wanting to give up. Yes being a woman in entertainment can be tough at times but I’m a pretty resilient chick. Anyone who truly knows me knows I’m going to do what I want and get it done how I want – regardless.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Jay Sage Productions story. Tell us more about the business.
Jay Sage Productions provides live events the services they need to successfully execute. In conjunction, we also provide entertainers, companies, creatives, and influencers complete promotional service and management solutions. Our services include entertainment consulting, event management, advertising, booking services and artist management. What sets my company apart is the breadth and network I’ve built from events I’ve dealt with. From booking artists for concerts to managing poetry slams, I’ve touched a lot.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see entertainment shifting to being a lot more consumer-driven than it already is. I see creatives, production teams, artists, management, a majority of people in the creative space, becoming even more focused on what the consumer wants. Yes, they keep their soul in their work, but the consumer will determine the success of almost everything. If something pops on social media, then it pops. The consumer controls that. Overall though, I think the industry will progress in a good way though especially in Dallas. People are really starting to collaborate.
