Today we’d like to introduce you to Jan Guinn.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The main portion of my career was spent in home health care where my position ranged from billing clerk to office manager to regional and national positions and agency director. As I changed jobs and companies, my stress level kept rising. I started taking Yoga classes in 2002 as a stress reliever. I was a believer after my first class and by 2004, I had made the decision to leave behind my work in home healthcare and begin teaching and sharing my love of yoga.
I taught classes in gyms, YMCA’s, assisted living facilities, senior centers, yoga studios and corporate offices. My life was in my car but I loved every minute of it! It’s so gratifying to know that you are making a difference in people’s lives.
In 2012, I was given the opportunity to buy a yoga studio. It wasn’t just any studio – it was the studio owned by my very first yoga teacher and I was teaching several classes a week there so knew the teachers and students.
My initial response was NO. I had no desire to own a studio. But after a couple months, things just started to come together and I knew it was the right choice. I took ownership of the studio November 2012 and I’ve never regretted that decision.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ha! If only life were smooth!! Companies get bought and sold. You have a job and then you don’t – at least not the job you thought you’d signed on for! I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was in serious need of some work life and family life balance. All those years of 12-16 hour days were starting to take their toll and I was losing the drive and focus that I needed to continue to be successful.
I probably went a bit extreme when I said “I’m done” and decided to teach yoga but with the support of my family, friends and teachers, I made it work…because I wanted it. And for the first time in my life I knew that I was exactly where I was supposed to be, doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing.
The yoga road has had its bumps and bruises, too but I’ve learned to accept them as part of the journey and to enjoy the ride!
Please tell us about Yoga From the Heart.
Yoga From the Heart is a yoga studio located in Coppell, Texas. We offer multiple yoga classes day.
Our studio is not a hot yoga studio and we’re not a power yoga studio. We are known for offering slower paced classes that allow the students time to experience the stretch and strength of each pose. It’s a practice that appeals to young and old alike but the majority of our students are baby-boomers looking for a place where they can find stress and pain relief.
The most common comment that I get from new-comers is how warm and welcoming the studio feels when they first walk in the door. That’s part of my goal and knowing that I’ve succeeded is very rewarding. We are a community and I feel blessed that so many people feel “at home”. When our HVAC system bit the dust last summer, this group of amazing teachers and yogis came together and raised over 75% of the monies needed to replace the system. That’s what sets us apart!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I grew up in Erie, PA and my favorite memories are Sunday morning breakfasts at the beach!
