Meet Janal Reid of Dallas, Texas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janal Reid

Hi Janal, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My business partner and husband Brian Reid’s journey in the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) industry began in 2010, driven by a vision to serve in the community. After earning his certification from Eastfield College, Brian started at a small family-owned HVAC business, where he gained hands-on experience in both the technical aspects and the operational nuances of running a small company. His role as a protégé under the owner provided him with invaluable insights and a solid foundation in industry best practices.

I joined Brian on this journey shortly after, interning at the same family-owned business. My internship there allowed me to gain deep knowledge of HVAC operations and customer service, complementing Brian’s technical skills and reinforcing our shared understanding of the business.

Recognizing a gap in the industry for businesses that combined technical proficiency with integrity and customer-focused service, we decided to take a leap of faith in 2015. With five years of experience and a shared vision, we left our stable jobs to start Serveway Heating and Air Conditioning. From a modest beginning with a single truck and a cell phone operating out of a home office, we built a company dedicated to “Service the Right Way.”

Our commitment quickly resonated with the community, and Serveway has grown into a thriving business. With Brian’s technical expertise and my business acumen, we have established a strong foundation that continues to set new standards in the HVAC industry. For nearly a decade, Serveway has been a beacon of professionalism and innovation, driven by our relentless pursuit of excellence and dedication to exceptional service.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The path to success for Serveway Heating and Air Conditioning has certainly had its share of obstacles. When Brian and I first launched our company, the initial excitement of rapid growth was exhilarating. We quickly expanded, hiring new team members to keep up with the demand. However, this swift scaling presented its own set of challenges.

One major issue was that we didn’t have enough time to establish a cohesive process for training or to cultivate a strong company culture. As our team grew, the lack of a unified culture led to a fragmented work environment where team members were working in silos rather than collaborating towards a common goal. Despite our commitment to delivering top-notch service, this disconnect meant that our vision was not effectively reaching the technicians in the field.

Facing this disjointed team and realizing the need to reassess our approach was a humbling experience. It felt like a significant setback to have to step back, make difficult personnel decisions, and completely overhaul our operational structure. But Brian and I recognized that these challenges were crucial learning experiences.

We came to understand that building a company culture, much like nurturing a relationship or family, is something that happens either by design or by default. Determined to turn our experience into a positive transformation, we refocused on prioritizing team culture. We invested in creating an environment that was not only growth-oriented and fun-loving but also one that fostered meaningful relationships within our community.

Today, Serveway Heating and Air Conditioning is proud of its vibrant, life-giving team culture. By learning from our early missteps and committing to a deliberate and inclusive approach, we have built a team that truly embodies our values and delivers exceptional service. Our journey highlights the importance of a strong, unified culture in achieving both internal success and community engagement.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In the bustling Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) metroplex, what truly sets Serveway Heating and Air Conditioning apart is its essence: local, family-owned, and deeply rooted in the community. As a husband-and-wife team, Brian and I, Janal Reid, live and work right here in the Metroplex, allowing us to intimately understand the local climate trends and cater to the unique needs of DFW residents. Our personal connection to the area helps us provide tailored, high-quality service that resonates with our clients.

Serveway proudly serves thousands of customers across both commercial and residential sectors throughout the DFW area. Our comprehensive range of services includes HVAC Repairs, HVAC Maintenance, HVAC System Replacement, Ductwork Cleaning and Replacement, Air Purification Products and Services, Attic Insulation, and Radiant Barriers. Our mission is to help our customers maintain the comfort, safety, and cleanliness of their homes and workplaces with exceptional service.

Beyond our commitment to high-quality service, Brian and I are deeply invested in giving back to our community. We founded the Next Generation of Tradesmen Foundation (NGTF) to address a critical gap we’ve observed: while skilled trades are immensely rewarding, they often go underappreciated. NGTF aims to educate high school students about the promising opportunities in HVAC and the construction trades, advocating for these careers as viable, debt-free alternatives to traditional college degrees.

We are passionate about making the construction trades appealing and relevant by showcasing the satisfaction that comes from serving our community and the financial benefits of acquiring a skill early in life. Through NGTF, we are dedicated to sharing our knowledge and experiences, empowering the next generation of leaders to achieve remarkable success. Our goal is to inspire young people to view the trades not just as a career option, but as a path to both personal fulfillment and financial stability.

Any big plans?
As Serveway Heating and Air Conditioning approaches its tenth anniversary, we eagerly anticipate continuing our journey in this dynamic and evolving industry. Over the past decade, we’ve built a robust training program designed to ignite a passion for HVAC in new technicians, fostering their growth and love for the field.

Our vision extends beyond our own success. We aspire to collaborate with like-minded companies across the construction industry—those eager to mentor, train, and hire the next generation of tradespeople. While we are proud of the unique culture and expertise we’ve cultivated at Serveway, we recognize that many exceptional companies nationwide share our commitment to excellent service and investing in their teams.

Trades are essential services, and their importance remains unwavering. Our future goals focus on addressing the workforce shortage that impacts both employers and consumers. The challenge is not a lack of opportunity but rather a shortage of awareness. Through the Next Generation of Tradesmen Foundation (NGTF), we are dedicated to providing students with valuable information and alternative career paths. By collaborating with electricians, plumbers, HVAC contractors, and construction developers, we aim to bridge the gap and revitalize the trades for young people across the country.
