Today we’d like to introduce you to Janaye Bryant.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born and raised in Jackson, MS. While Growing up I was always interested in various creative activities, such as dance, music, literature but funny enough makeup was never on the radar! I was not a girly girl and wasn’t into makeup or fashion. But one semester in college I decided I wanted to change that. So, I started to watch tutorials on YouTube, mostly about hair styling (till this day I still do a bad job styling my hair).
I stumbled upon makeup videos while exploring and my interests branched off. And surprisingly that came easier to me. It got to a point where I would do different looks on myself every day and post them online. People saw these photos and started reaching out asking me to do their makeup. I was terrified to say the least! Thoughts of not being perfect always bothered me. I always thought “what if I screw up someone’s makeup?!”, “What if they hate it?!”. I began practicing on my sisters every chance I got until I felt comfortable enough taking on my friends’ requests and then complete strangers.
By 2015, I had become one of the top makeup artists in my city. I had chanced upon this art, but passion and the desire for mastery had helped spur this relatively fast growth. I was grateful for that but I wanted more. So, a friend and I decided we were leaving and moving to Dallas. Armed with nothing but an old minivan – a gift from My grandmother, and a bag of clothes! There was no plan, no job, nowhere to live. Only a dream.
I came to Dallas, updated my social media profile and declared- Janaye Faces is open for business. Fast forward to 2018, banking on the same principles that earned me a successful career in Jackson I have managed to replicate that success in a bigger city. I also have fallen in love with the city, the people and the culture. Every day I am reminded of the rewards of taking a leap of faith, believing in core principles of business and sticking to doing what you love. Making people beautiful is just an icing on the cake!
Please tell us about your art.
Make-up is the one art form where the canvas dictates how it’s being painted. I always make sure to listen to my clients on what they hope to achieve. It’s my goal afterwards to work to get as close as possible to the image they have in their imagination. Yes, the mischievous artist in me does get in the way, but only within margins that flirt with the desired or perceived wishes of my beautiful clients. Everybody is beautiful in their own unique ways. I see My work as amplifying the obvious or subtly obvious points we have that others don’t. Enhancing beauty, not necessarily inventing it.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
The role of artists has definitely evolved through the years. Most especially in the beauty/make-up industry, as all-inclusive products have emerged to cater to the needs of POCs and other minorities so has people’s tastes. The beauty consultants have had to be abreast with a lot of these changes, and learn quickly to remain relevant.
Also artists have a much more effective (in reaching a target audience) means of showing their work.
Facebook, Instagram and the likes are directly competing with showrooms and other media that would traditionally be gateways to the public eyes. The artist as a result has had to wear many hats in some cases – Photographer, publicists, Marketers. Or build your business to incorporate those functions. Janaye Faces incorporates a handful of these to its cast of operations and that has been key to its Longevity and fast rise.
