Today we’d like to introduce you to Janelle Rodriguez.
Janelle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have a family full of bakers. My grandma is a Baker, some of my cousins and a couple of my Aunts. I’ve always been fascinated with the techniques of cake decorating but never could see myself making a career of it. But whenever I had my daughter, I couldn’t imagine not being with her. So I had the idea of starting a baking business! That way, I could be with her and still have income coming in. It was one of those things where I just dived right in.
As I kept learning and got the hang of it, my business started taking off from there. And with the support of many boss babes, my business became known in the DFW area. But when COVID hit, my business got impacted by the pandemic. I couldn’t find the supplies I needed to bake cakes. So I thought of the idea for dessert jars! And boy, did that take off! It’s a fun dessert that you can take with you on the go! So I can proudly say I can make my business work with no matter what life throws at me.
Has it been a smooth road?
With any business, there’s going to be ups and downs. I never struggled with my business until COVID hit. It was a very difficult time in the beginning because I couldn’t find certain ingredients I needed or I couldn’t find certain materials I needed. So I decided to just put cakes aside for the meantime. That’s when I came up with my dessert jars! I started out with three flavors and I was getting over 200 orders of those alone. So I kept the jars going and it stuck! So COVID closed one door for a while but it opened another in the process.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a home-based business. I bake from the comfort of my own home but hopefully, in the near future, can open up a shop. I specialize in decorative cakes, treats and dessert jars. I’m known mainly for my Dessert Jars and Macaroons. I’m most proud of my gift to give back. I like to do giveaways to say thank you to everyone who follows me and supports my work. It makes me happy to see other people happy. I know times are tough for everyone right now but it’s good to let people know that they’re not alone.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love our Dallas Skyline. And I would say the thing I like least is seeing so many people in poverty. It hurts to see so many people without a place to live or food to eat.
