Meet Janet Akorikin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janet Akorikin.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Rewind to 2017, I was going through one of the hardest times in my life. I had recently quit my full-time job to start my first semester of graduate school, and I was going through it physically, mentally, spiritually, and financially. I was in such a low point in my life that I used writing as an outlet to help me organize my thoughts and emotions. As I continued to write more, I realized at the time I wasn’t utilizing my creative gifts at all. So, I began looking for ways I can express myself creatively that will help me get my mind off of the things I was dealing with in real life. While skimming through the internet, blogging somehow came to me. I’ve always seen people have blogs, but I never really knew the ins and outs of how a blog runs, how to monetize it, or even how to create one on my own. Once I knew starting a blog was something I wanted to do, I spent the next three-four months researching everything there is to know about creating and running a successful blog. Initially, my blog was intended to be a passion project; a place that I just share my interests and experiences and hopefully, inspire someone on the other side. Though I’ve only been blogging for a year, it’s incredible to see how much my blog has grown in that time span and the amazing opportunities that have come forth from it.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. One thing I can say about blogging is, it is a marathon, not a sprint. You really have to love what you do because it’s not just about posting pretty pictures or the money. A common struggle I see in this industry is people get caught up in the numbers and likes. I would advise anyone wanting to start a blog to focus on creating good and consistent content. Followers, brand deals, and money will come, put your focus on creating content that you are proud of and represents your brand well.

One of the main struggles I faced is dealing with burnout. It can get overwhelming sometimes doing everything on your own; from being the creative director, photographer, model, writer, editor, etc. There were moments I was hard on myself for not being consistent or felt like giving up when I got overwhelmed, but one major lesson I’ve learned is to NEVER GIVE UP! You can take breaks but don’t quit. In this industry, you have to be kind to yourself and understand you’re not going to have it all figured out and that’s the beauty of it. My advice is to not put too much pressure on yourself and seek outside help if you need it. Also, there are going to be moments when you are uninspired, but take the time you need to recharge, then come back and pick up where you left off.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a Lifestyle Blogger. My content areas are Beauty, Fashion, Health and Wellness, and Lifestyle. I’m usually known for my makeup looks and outfits, but what I love about the content that I create is my mission is set on inspiring women to LOOK GOOD, FEEL GOOD, and DO GOOD. It’s not just solely about looking beautiful on the outside, but also being a beautiful person on the inside as well. I feel like what sets me apart is that I’ve always been a well-rounded woman. I want women to know that they can have the whole package. You can be a great woman, change the world, and look AMAZING while doing it.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I’ll be writing all day if I had to list everyone who has supported me on this journey. When venturing out and doing something on your own, it can be scary, exciting, and nerve-wracking all in one. For me, the most important factors to my success have to be GOD and the constant support from my friends and family.

Nonetheless, I would like to extend credit to:

My mentor, Taffney Taylor: I honestly don’t believe my blog would have launched if it wasn’t for her. She kept me accountable and helped me lay the foundation of my blog before it was even created. She spoke life into me every week regarding life, my blog, my goals, and dreams. She was a huge reason why I actually put action behind the idea of having a blog.

My Tribe: “The Foolish Goats” Christine and Cynthia. How can I not mention the two people who hold me down through thick and thin? If I need help shooting content or just someone to vent to, they ALWAYS come through for me. Anytime I’m feeling down or being inconsistent I can always count on them to encourage me to push through and continue creating bomb content.

Blogger BFF: Gabby Gaiter. One of my closest friends who is also a blogger in New York. I feel like I can talk to her about the ups and downs of blogging. I really value her insight and love bouncing ideas off of her even though we’re a thousand miles away.

My Family: My amazing Mom who has been nothing but supportive, even when she doesn’t fully understand what I do. She’s always allowed me to express myself and given me the freedom to figure out life my way. I also want to give credit to my siblings who have always supported me since Day 1, whether it’s helping me take pictures, film videos, or just simply encourage me. They have played a huge role in keeping me focused and motivated on reaching the goals for my blog.
