Meet Jarred Beaujean of Flower Mound Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jarred Beaujean.

Hi Jarred, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
To be honest, it took me a while to figure out that I wanted to be a mental health counselor. As a student in college, I struggled with what I wanted to do for a career. It wasn’t until someone very close to me proposed the idea into my awareness. It was something that I never really thought of, but growing up, I always wanted to be in a career where I could make a difference—better the world somehow. After much consideration, I decided to embrace the idea and was eager to see if it was a passion of mine. As an undergrad with no experience, I spent days going to different counselors and calling multiple offices to see if they needed an intern. Only one office called me back. I was so excited to get started! While I wasn’t practicing being a counselor and I was only doing administrative work, through my research and learning so much from my supervisor and the other counselors on staff, I knew this was the field that I could thrive in. After deciding to enroll in a master’s program and, specifically, going though my clinical hours portion of the program, I knew this was my passion and I looked forward to making a difference in people’s lives. After practicing as a professional for nearly three years now, I feel so blessed to be a counselor and I strive everyday to be the best I can be for my clients. I know it sounds cliché, but I truly believe that making a difference in one person’s life can potentially help make the world a better place!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like with anything else, there were definitely some struggles along the way. However, I was able to cope well and empower myself when things became difficult because I knew becoming a counselor and being able to help others would be worth it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Flower Mound Counseling?
While I originally wanted to work with kiddos using Play Therapy, I’ve expanded my scope to working with ages 3 and up. My specialties include helping those struggling with depression and anxiety (including if there is any suicidal or homicidal ideation as a factor), play therapy for kids ages 3-11, improving self-esteem and self-identification, life transitions, grief, couple’s counseling, improving communication, and emotion regulation. I also work with student-athletes with the demands of their roles, scheduling efficiently, and improving performance anxiety and self-esteem issues.

While I utilize play therapy skills for the kids that I see, with my teen and adult clients, I utilize skills and the methodology from the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy framework. I believe that our thoughts influence our feelings, which in turn influence our behaviors. The way I like to think about it is your brain has these cognitive bridges that have developed over time that don’t serve you in the best way. My goal is to “break those down” and replace them with new bridges of thinking that are more helpful and positive. As a counselor, I obviously believe in developing coping skills, however, depending on the situation, those skills may not always be available. I feel that having a different mindset on challenges and distressful situations can better serve my clients.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned along my journey is to just be my genuine self. Just being present and striving to make my clients feel connected, safe, and understood really goes a long way.
