Meet Jarrett Small of The Flaming Skillet in Oak Cliff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jarrett Small.

Jarrett, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey began as a youngster… being forced into the kitchen by my “warden” of a mother… at the age of six or seven years old. My mom and dad were great cooks, so delicious food was a common denominator in our house.

As I grew older, my sister (who’s a pastry chef, herself) and I created our first restaurant, from the comfort of our own home called B.L.D.’s (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner). We were probably in our teens at the time. My focus, however, was never to be in the kitchen, even though I loved to cook. My primary focus and hobbies surrounded church and music. Those were my main passions… so I thought.

It wasn’t until I was fired from a job, that I embarked on a career in the Culinary Arts. It was then that God thrusted me into the beginning stages of operating my own business. So I began selling plates from my car… this was probably in 2013. I sold plates and worked at a family owned daycare.

It took five years of building for me to venture out and become a full-time entrepreneur. September of 2018, I became my own full-time boss! With no traditional culinary training, The Flaming Skillet is becoming a recognized food servicing outlet, for many.

I’ve made major mistakes… almost wanted to quit and give up… but it was the people, our clients, who continued to push and give us a sense of necessity and genuine want.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The struggle has definitely been REAL! Let’s just say that. However, the good always outways the bad, in the end.

Please tell us about The Flaming Skillet.
We specialize in absolutely amazing cuisine, bold, elegant, one of a kind culinary creations and set-ups. Our SkilletFIT Meals are a hit! Our Maple Bacon & Red Velvet Chicken and Waffles, Salmon & Loaded Potato waffles, double crusted caramel peach cobbler, specialty deviled eggs (pulled pork, southwestern chorizo, deep fried… just to name a few) are always hits.

I’m proud of the consistency that our brand brings! Every time, you will get great customer service, amazing food, one of a kind experience! What sets us apart is that we take flavor very serious around here. We use housemade seasoning blends, to ensure unique, quality flavor, and make our sauces, syrups, etc. from scratch.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have planned to not be in a hurry for success. When you’re in a hurry for success, you negate the fruits of the process. The process of becoming successful should be embraced. That’s what really tells you who you are, and what you stand for.
