Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmin Singh.
Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmin Singh, the owner of Zarin.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jasmin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Zarin was initially started as a test project as I was trying to practice my digital marketing skills in the fashion industry. I curated the top pieces that were trending in the fashion industry at the moment and started an e-commerce website. Later, project Zarin developed into a brand that inspires to bridge the gap between artisan goods and the artisan.
Growing up, I would enjoy shopping at local markets so much that it became a goal of mine to shop local at least once a week. During one of my shopping experiences, I noticed jewelry and artifacts with names such as Buddha, Himalayan, etc. Being a Nepal native, I became curious about where and how these items were made. It was to my surprise to find that the goods were not made in Nepal but only carried a misleading name. When Zarin was established, I reached out to local artisans in the Kathmandu Valley for collaboration. After many e-mails and 2 a.m. video calls, Zarin is currently in collaboration with almost seven different artisans in Nepal.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This is cliché, but nothing worth having in life comes easy. I am a one-woman team that chooses to wear many hats. From seeing patients for speech therapy, managing clients for digital marketing, and now running an online business—it’s definitely not easy, but it’s worth it. To me, it’s all a matter of choice—I can either go after my goals knowing it’s not easy or give up on my vision to and take the “easy” route—the latter was never an option.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I started Zarin less than six months ago with one goal in mind: How how to gain traction from Instagram to an e-commerce website. This has quickly changed—Zarin is now in partnership up with local artisans in Nepal to highlight their amazing detail-oriented work.
We will still have the modern and vintage jewelry for our stylish clients. However, we will also highlight and sell handcrafted goods from Nepal.
What were you like growing up?
I have always strived to be like my mother— brave and effortlessly fierce. She was the first woman from her family to have her own career. She left her small town when she was just 18 years old to pursue a career in aviation. She even helped support my father while he was in grad school working on his Ph.D.
Most of my childhood consists of me watching my parents work tirelessly to build a future for my sister, brother, and I. From my dad’s international work trips to my mom managing the family business from home taught me that nothing in life comes easy. The work didn’t stop after our big move from Nepal to Texas. In fact, the workload doubled for my parents here in the US. I found it humbling to see my parents managing their business in Nepal with a team of over 400, to realizing that no job is too small in the US.
Sometimes, I pull out my childhood goal list that seven years old Jasmin put together. At the very top, you’ll find “be just like Mamu (my mom— still working on that one),” somewhere in the middle you’ll find “graduate from UT Austin (hook em’– checked that off the list),” and at the very end you’ll find, “Own a business.” Although owning a business hasn’t always been a priority of mine, sometimes we just have to take a leap of faith to try something different…and guess what? I’m here for it, I’m here for the ride.
