Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Bledsoe.
Jasmine, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been a creative my entire life. I remind my grandmother often about the way I’d use up all of her file folders as a kid turning them into my canvas or storyboard. I have always been given the freedom and space to be self-expressive. That is one of the things I am most grateful for in my life.
I learned that I loved to write once I was old enough to take the TAAS test. From there it honestly just kind of became my thing. I had already mastered drawing, so I was excited that I had discovered something else that I loved. I began writing poetry in middle school, and I haven’t stopped since that first stanza.
Being a creative has helped me grow in so many ways. It has definitely shaped who I have become as a person. It allows me to see the world in color and make words a safe haven for me. Now, I’m blogging, writing books, and creating art. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No journey is smooth. One of my greatest struggles has been staying true to myself when everyone around me expects me to have their logic. For a time in my life, I hid from my own identity because I wanted to just make everyone around me happy.
There have been plenty times when I have felt like a disappointment to my family because my logic is daring and theirs is strait and narrow. But you learn to adjust. You learn to be unapologetic. You learn to live out loud. Because at the end of YOUR day YOU are responsible for living out your own truth.
One thing that has become a mantra for me is, “I can not die full.” What that means for me is that, I owe it to myself to live a life so fearless and poured out that I leave here with not one ounce of God-given gifts and talents.
Says, Jasmine. – What should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Says, Jasmine is my personal lifestyle blog and purpose. I have coined the hashtag #WritingSavedMyLife. I created my blog at a time in my life when I felt like my voice was being silenced. Through this blog, I have been able to find my sound again.
I have been afforded many opportunities, of which I am grateful for, from this platform. I have hosted networking events; I am curating an entrepreneurial series, working on my second publication, and starting a nonprofit. I have been a featured blogger on different websites, and I have been booked to speak.
But what I am most proud of is how my Instagram account is currently helping others get through their rough days. My mission as a creative is to help others find their peace in this life. What sets me apart is the innate nature I have to help someone see the brighter side of the hardships that they may be facing. I have to let someone else know they can keep living.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I have two moments that I’m extremely fond of. One of the proudest moments of my career is undeniably my first book release. I was nervous and unsure, but through that uncertainty, I made things happen. I learned at that moment that everything I am called to is on the other side of fear.
The second moment is a public speaking opportunity that came as a result of that book. I was asked to speak to 4-5 groups of high school student at Alief Hastings High School during Black History month. That experience for me was everything. It allowed me to see myself in those children and connect with them more personally. I will take “Miss you’re dope” with me forever!
