Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Hillman.
Jasmine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in Dallas, Tx. I spent most of my adolescent years in DeSoto, Tx where I graduated high school before pursuing a bachelors in Early Childhood Education at Texas State University in San Marcos. After teaching for a short while, I decided to take my impact from the classroom to the community. Working at various non-profits with young ladies who were victims of domestic violence and/or sex trafficking, I developed a strong passion for uplifting and empowering women. Over time, it felt as if God was calling me to build a platform for women to share their gifts and stories, as well as learn how to lead in their communities, collaborate with like-minded people and have a safe space of sisterhood where they genuinely feel supported. After much prayer and planning, I decided to launch The Leadership and Legacy Network for Women and throw an annual event known as the Power and Purpose Party, a unique way to collectively celebrate our strengths as women. Though we are just now putting the wheels in motion, I believe this will be the next big movement and I have some pretty phenomenal women backing me. After surviving an abusive relationship at the age of 17, losing myself and eventually unmasking the woman I now love when I look in the mirror has given me my second wind and nothing will keep me from soaring from here. My family, faith and fervent desire to fulfill my purpose keep me strong on the challenging days but I know the work of my hands will never be in vain as I continue to do my heart’s work.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a very tumultuous journey. I’ve been unemployed at one point for years on end, stuck in workplaces that didn’t value me, personal trials that struck my family at the worst time, heartache and disappointment you could never prepare for. I honestly felt like I was drowning in depression and hopelessness. I needed something to believe in again and me being the writer that I am, I found therapy in my pen and paper before turning it into a public blog to help others heal through my own personal and painful experiences. Hearing people say that it was meant for me to help others with my candid truth made me want to stay the course until opportunities began presenting themselves to me from my ability to be completely vulnerable and open to what life and God had to offer.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I create a safe space for women who desire to be leaders, live a life of purpose, and see themselves being a catalyst for change in the communities they work, serve, worship and socialize in. Our entire focus is on community engagement, mentorship, and awareness that builds others up and educates them on barriers and breakthroughs as it pertains to their personal and professional lives. To bring women together who have already created or identified their own lane and are still willing to contribute their best to The Network for greater impact is just incredible. What sets us apart is the fact that we’re not another social club. We are sisters, adjusting one another’s crowns and acknowledging that we all play a special intricate role in making this world a better place.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I absolutely feel like our city is a great place for a business and vision like mine and would encourage any dreamer to start here if they feel compelled to do so. Dallas could use a little more southern hospitality, inclusiveness and togetherness that I hope to add, as well as join others on their quest to do the same.
