Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Morris.
Jasmine, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in New Orleans, LA and moved to Fort Worth, TX in 2009. Right out of high school, I started college pursuing a Nursing Degree. Semester after Semester my interest in Nursing grew thin however I wasn’t sure what exactly it was I wanted to do. After moving to Texas, meeting my now Husband and giving birth to my daughter, I was blessed with a job in corporate America. Inside that cubicle almost every day I did a lot of brainstorming, praying, and journaling. I knew my end goal was to be an entrepreneur and to be successful.
Hair has always been my thing and I would always get encouraged by my mom to pursue it. After speaking with a few people and doing some research, I decided to start Cosmetology school at Ogle in Fort Worth. During Cosmetology school, I grew a heavy interest in Natural Hair. There was a need for professionals to help with guidance in Natural hair and I wanted to be a part of that. After being blessed with an opportunity at the Huetiful Salon in Arlington, TX, my love and passion for natural/textured hair grew larger than I expected.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Although there are still a lot of challenges, there’s also a lot of rewards. For one, I “use” to classify myself as an introvert, I would never talk to someone unless they spoke to me first. This is a major challenge in this industry because you have to be able to connect with your client. You also have to market/advertise yourself in a way that no one else will, so being uncomfortable initiating a conversation was not an option. It took me a few years to grow from that. Another challenge I faced was making sure I give it my all and trusting God. I have to keep myself on my toes and remind myself to never get comfortable. And to never give up when there is a challenge.
Please tell us about your work.
I am The Kurl Twirl and my specialty is performing services for Textured Hair. What I love most is being able to provide an experience to my clients. At the Kurl Twirl Studio, I want my clients to learn things about their hair that they’ve never learned before. I want my clients to know that I value their hair, their time and that their hair has my undivided attention during their service.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would say that if I had to start over, I would have pursued my passion a long time ago. However, I’m a firm believer that the journey you travel is for a reason. So I honestly would not have done anything differently.
