Meet Jason Boso of Truck Yard in Lowest Greenville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Boso.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jason. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started out as an investment broker out of college… and hated it. I eventually ran off to the US Virgin Islands to work on a boat before coming back to go to culinary school. I extended at the Four Seasons and had a few other jobs before opening Twisted Root in Deep Ellum in 2006. We were lucky enough to be featured on Drive-Ins Diners and Dives, which increased our customer base and made getting investors in future restaurants easier. In 2012 my landlord in Deep Ellum said there was a property over in Lowest Greenville that he had, and he wondered if I could do anything with it. It was a junk yard where an old repair shop sat, but it had great trees and a lot of space. And that’s how Truck Yard was born.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all. We’ve had a real struggle finding the right management team which caused some poor customer service and didn’t give the employee experience we wanted either. However, we’ve got a fantastic team now that makes me feel really lucky. We also had a lot of trouble with the homeowner’s association in our neighborhood which was quite stressful. After some meetings and being really watchful of our noise and even cutting our evening music program, I hope the neighborhood would say we’re good and respectful neighbors.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Truck Yard is Texas style cocktail-and-beer garden that also serves killer cheesesteaks. We partner with local food truck owners to provide additional food options and we have a mini-shop for Bullzerk in the backyard as well as an old-school ice cream window in the front. I’m most proud of how laid-back our environment is in a city that typically is a little more fancy-pants. What sets us apart is an environment in which people of all ages and backgrounds can hang out all day long as friends come and go.

What were you like growing up?
I loved the outdoors and spent most of my childhood in a boat fishing or playing baseball. I was a good kid but was definitely the instigator of things like taking pies from the dumpster that the local grocery store had thrown away and having massive pie fights with friends…and we might have set a fire in the dumpster.
