Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Riley Hoss.
Jason Riley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve had a passion for the Arts & Entertainment my entire life. My seeds in photography were actually planted when I served in the U.S. Army in the 1990’s, learning how to use surveillance equipment and performing Intelligence operations as part of a ground reconnaissance unit. While stationed in Europe, I began taking pictures of the landscape and architecture. Then, by 2000, my roots took hold during my career in the film industry, which I still do today. I cannot begin to explain all the intricate details of how appreciative I am of my film production experience, but to simply say that it has been an invaluable tool for me as a still photographer. It has provided me with an array of different perspectives and mechanics to produce dramatic and inspiring images. The wisdom I have gained from my film career has allowed me to excel with a unique ability to tell a story with a single portrait. I’ve also had the great opportunity to specialize in both natural and artificial lighting techniques, so my creative ambitions are never limited to the adherence of one style. While at work, I am constantly within a bubble of creativity and I have a firm belief that not only are my subjects deserving of much more than a standard, linear process, but that each and every image I capture can be as original as the next. For me, it’s not as simple as just taking a picture; we are creating a work of art.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning, before I decided to make photography a full-time job, it was simple, and straight forward. As a hobby, I didn’t have the challenges of running a business and keeping myself on the competitive edge to garnish more clients. But, as soon as I decided to go for it, full time, then came the challenges of learning how to run a business. Everything from online marketing, websites, customer experience, pricing, and learning the laws, rules, and regulations, just to name a few, were the biggest challenges. But, if you love what you do, which I do, this is just a necessary step towards building a successful venture into a chosen career. And honestly, 90% of the time, I don’t feel like I’m working, because I just love it! The biggest struggle, in the actual photography phase, is the desire to be original in the creative process. There are so many great, established photographers out there, so at this stage, without the extreme capital to create above and beyond portraiture, I try my best to be naturally creative by simply working on my compositions, camera angles, lighting, and of course, capturing my subject in their finest moment. As these struggles become less, and my portraiture gains in style and creativity, I know the rest will come in time.
Please tell us about Jason Riley Hoss Photography.
My most common services are Headshot, Portrait, and Fashion Photography, both on an individual and commercial platform. However, I also compose for Family Portraiture, Engagement and Wedding Photography; and Special Events such as a Birthday Parties, Family Reunions, and other Celebrations. I also conduct Commercial Product & Real Estate Photography. In addition, I can meet the Graphic Designing demands for Marketing Materials such as Brochures, Flyers, Magazine, Books, and CD / DVD Layouts that Musicians, Bands, and Film Projects require.
What sets me apart from others is my ability to capture images that tell a story. I love to capture people when they least expect it, and when this happens, much of my portraiture, and its composition, seem like stills from a movie. Also, I do not use a permanent studio location. This keeps my cost down for the client and keeps my photography original with most every client.
My motto is simply and truthfully put . . . I’d love the opportunity to show you that the world around us is made even more beautiful, with YOU in it!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood is a tough one; I had a lot of good moments in life. If I had to choose, it would be a group of memories. I really enjoyed going to my Grandparents house in Louisiana. It was a farm house in the middle of nowhere. They had everything from Chickens to Pigs, Cows to Good Fishing Ponds, and Grandma always made the best food, always fresh from the gardens, too. I loved those days, running around, adventuring, and then coming inside to cool off in front of those window air conditioners. The fireplace roaring at Christmas and the Coyote calls late at night in the countryside, now that was cool. And of course, hanging out with my grandfather and listening to his stories. That’s my most wonderful memories . . . my grandparent’s house in Louisiana.
