Meet Jason Yma of Iron Horse Contractors in McKinney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Yma.

Jason, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It all started growing up in a family that believed in ‘do-it-yourself’. My father being skilled in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, flooring, drywall, concrete, fencing and finishes, really set the foundation for a construction future. After graduating from the University of Texas at Dallas, my formal experience, training and certifications came from a 7 year term where I worked as a catastrophe insurance adjuster handling insurance claims for hail, wind, water and fire. The experience and knowledge obtained serves as invaluable to the repair and restoration projects that we perform today.

After traveling the country, assessing and writing rebuild estimates, I went to work under the roofing and construction company of a friend and mentor. Here, I obtained further construction industry knowledge and know-how. It is also where I discovered that my true calling, which is in providing quality expertise, exceptional customer service and dedication to serving others.

The experience and enlightenment of the past few years have contributed to the real purpose and place of my company. We focus on what we do best, which is providing quality roofing services along with the experience and resources to handle all storm restoration projects.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Looking back, everything that has happened in my life, family, and career has been a result of understanding that what I want does not happen on my time but on God’s time. Do more work than you are paid, be positive and do what’s right.

I count my struggles as blessings. They have included:

Learning more about people.
Understanding I’m not always right (tough one).
Learning to listen (another tough one).
Learning when to be quiet.
Learning when it’s not my way, that’s ok.
Learning not to blame other people or processes.
Understanding nobody cares about excuses.

It was a tough, long and calculated decision to leave a nice and secure corporate job. I am more fulfilled personally and professionally with the risks that I have taken and struggles I have experienced.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a general contracting company that specializes in all types of residential and commercial roofing. Coming from an insurance background, we also specialize in performing all repairs that are consistent with wind and hail damages. That includes gutter systems, exterior paint/stain, and trim work along with fence restoration.

What sets us apart from other contractors in our industry is quite simple. We keep open and available lines of communication, we show up on time and we do what we say we are going to do.

I am most proud of the fact that we build trusting and lasting relationships with our customers. We are real people that you can rely on.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up was great. Get with the neighborhood kids and play sports after school, ride bikes, play video games (N64, so much fun). Saturdays were cartoons and chores. What most people, including my family, don’t really know about my personality, is that I was and am still very OCD. Little things, that probably only my wife notices now!

I was always very friendly to new people and made friends easily. If my friends ever needed anything or were in trouble, I would make it a priority to help them out. I still do today. In fact, I am still great friends with people that I went to elementary school, all the way to college. A couple of us now work together as well!
