Today we’d like to introduce you to Javian Davis.
Javian, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started cutting my own hair back when I was 12 years old because growing up, we would either go to the barber college or my mom would cut our hair; I hated that. Being talented in the small town of Arkadelphia, AR, word spread and I was able to cut family and friends hair throughout middle school, high school, and throughout college. It was 2007 when I decided to start barber college. Shortly after, in 2008, I caught a charge then went to prison as a first time offender. I was briefly allowed out to witness my son being born. That’s when I knew I needed to focus on a real plan.
Coming home with a fresh mindset for 2012 put me in position to succeed. I competed in a barber competition for Bigen, placing 1st in regionals and top 3 nationally landing me a position as a platform artist for Bigen (the 2nd largest color company in the world) which gave me motivation to build my brand. I also went back to instructor school where I started to focus on education. That summer, I met Curtis Smith (known for being the barber of celebrities including P. Diddy and Usher among others) and was presented the opportunity to be part of an elite team of barbers, Team Xotics. Learning from Curtis and others apart of the team, I was able to see a whole new aspect of the barber industry. I began selling products, educating classes, networking and promoting myself in high-end markets. In 2016, I directed at Washington Barber College and was also an ambassador for Nu Dread until 2017.
I moved to Dallas less than two years ago. My two business partners, Curtis Smith and Will McNeely and I opened Master Barber Grooming Lounge in April of 2019. The idea was to bring Dallas a luxury grooming lounge that doesn’t stop short of the full experience from a complimentary alcohol bar, luxury cologne bar, a complimentary hot towel facial in premium barber chairs with top of the line natural products. The upscale atmosphere and customer experience that MBGL offers is a vision that I will continue to build on.
Has it been a smooth road?
As one might imagine from my story, the road hasn’t always been smooth. One of the bigger struggles for me was after obtaining full custody of my son, having to balance being a single father while building businesses. It’s tough sometimes, but it keeps me motivated and striving for mastery. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Another struggle was readjusting back into society from being in prison and having to start all the way over. Rebuilding was a challenge, however, attending trade shows and really focusing on mastery of the craft made it a lot easier.

Master Barber Grooming Lounge is open 7 am – Midnight Tuesday-Sunday. We offer a full-service experience from facials, hot towel razor shaves, hair replacements to micropigmentations (SMP). Our team is knowledgeable about our craft and able to tailor each service to best fit each person’s needs. Being a perfectionist, I’m attentive to detail and specialize in hair replacements which is what I believe has brought forth the most variety. I offer classes, a mentorship program as well as having a nonprofit, Personal Enhancement Mobile, where we get out to help under-served adults and children in our communities. What sets us apart is easily the experience, atmosphere, and knowledge of the craft. We are proudly the best barbershop in Dallas in our first six months of opening.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel like Dallas is a great place to have this type of business. The city is growing at a fast pace which means there are new clients moving here on the regular that are looking for good barbers and something different. There are also a lot of new businesses and corporations moving here, which brings a whole new market of entertainers to the city. With Master Barber Grooming Lounge being only 5 min from Dallas Love Field, we are one of the first businesses searched with 5-star ratings, which brings in a lot of business. If someone was just starting here, I would recommend it bc there is so much opportunity and potential for growth, you can’t lose. Barbers in Dallas lack customer service and creating an experience, so it makes it easy for me to market and get new clients. We just have to stay consistent and persistent.
