Today we’d like to introduce you to Javier Tamez.
Javier, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Monterrey, NL. Mexico. Being surrounded by beautiful statues, cathedrals, graffiti/street art, and art museums helped fuel my passion and inspiration for creating art. When I moved to Texas, I met my wife and have two awesome kids. I worked for an art school and gallery for 14 years, where I was able to learn all aspects of art from oil painting to sculpting and fused glass. This gave me the opportunity to work with many different mediums expanding my knowledge in different processes and applications.
In 2015 I started my apprenticeship at Dark Age tattoo studio in Denton, where I have been working full time ever since. I took my art from painting on canvas to using the human body to capture mine and my client’s visions.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think that apprenticing while working a full time job, as well as raising a family was a bit challenging but the pay off has been well worth the struggle. I get to work in a great environment full of amazing artists and good friends, which makes my hour drive on 35 to work a lot less painful lol. Shout out to Rember and Francisco for the opportunity of a lifetime.
Please tell us about your work.
I’m proud to be a tattoo artist at Dark Age. In my work, I love mixing black and grey with color realism for a surrealistic look. I truly enjoy tattooing roses or any other kind of flower while intermixing other elements. I believe that getting a tattoo should always be a great experience for everyone involved.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Family and friends.
