Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayla The Muse.
Jayla, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in Birmingham Alabama where finding myself was extremely difficult. I was often bullied and teased for my dark skin and suffered terrible insecurities throughout my school years. I always heard I should take up modeling, but I didn’t believe I had the beauty or the creativity for that so I would always brush it off. Two years ago I was at rock bottom and needed to pull myself out of a funk, so I went to a casting call for models thinking why not. And that was the start of my modeling. Fast forward to August 2018 my family suffered a horrible situation that led to our family home being essentially destroyed. Hard times really kicked in at that point we were living in a rundown motel 6. I thought to myself I’ve got to get out of here and break this curse upon my family. I packed my bags October 7th and drove to Texas where I reunited with my boyfriend whom I met in my home town.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do? Why? And what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a model, but I like to consider myself an artist. I manipulate my body to create beautiful pictures. I do this by taking myself away mentally and pretending to be someone else. You could say I’m roleplaying in my head and portraying that in front of a camera. Doing this makes me feel beautiful and powerful. I feel as if it allows me to connect with past and future versions of myself. My main inspiration behind this is self-love, I really needed to learn what that was and this avenue helped me find it. I want people to look at my work and feel inspired to do anything they want to do because it’s possible. All it takes is believing in yourself and execution. You should Know that my art Work is one of a kind and will always send a message to inspire all especially Young girls who struggle with feeling beautiful or knowing their worth.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
It’s definitely difficult being an artist right now simply because we are living in a time where everyone is some form of artist thanks to social media so in any craft it’s easy to feel like a dime a dozen. With that being said you have to work 20xs harder every day because of heavy competition. I think the DFW can help artists by organizing events that could bring creatives together to network and possibly do business together. Maybe the event could be sponsored by a big company, and it could really be a thing! Also, artist appreciation showcases are nice because it lets the community know people are watching and paying attention to the creativity which is very motivating.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work?
