Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazzmin Lewis.
Jazzmin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I learned how to braid at 12 years old. I then started doing my siblings and my own hair and from there I gained clientele throughout my school years and into college at UNT doing my friend’s hair for affordable prices since we were all broke college kids. In 2015 I found that I was pregnant with my daughter. I was so scared to be a mother but I knew God made no mistakes so I began planning my future. I had to quit working at a hotel I was employed at during that time due to serious nausea and pregnancy symptoms.
My mom then convinced me to get back into hair so I could braid from home and make my own schedule. Well, my clientele began to grow tremendously and I decided to enroll in cosmetology school while pregnant and I would complete my hours after I had my daughter. I started when she was 2 months old and finished in about 14 months. I immediately found a salon suite after I graduated in 2017. Fast forward to 2019, I’m currently on my 2nd year as a licensed Hairstylist with a constant growing clientele. I love being my own Boss!
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road but I believe the saying “Pressure Makes Diamonds”. When I was younger I always had a feeling that I would end up being a hairstylist because it has always been like second nature to me. I just wanted to have the college experience and take my education more serious but hair has always been my passion. Being a single mother was hard especially going through cosmetology school full time but I’m so thankful for my parents because they helped me with my daughter so that I could complete my course hours and graduate.
Then, of course, the opinions of others. It was important to me to put all my energy into my business and be successful so that I can motivate other women that they can do the same. So many people ask me ” Do you just do hair is this your ONLY job?.” and I always proudly say YES. I am my own boss so I have the flexibility to make my own schedule and still be there to raise my daughter full time.
Tell us more about the business.
The name of my business is called She’s Sew Jazzy Hair. I am located in a salon suite in Mesquite, TX. I specialize in Braids, Extensions, Custom Wigs, and Natural Hairstyles. I am mainly known for my Crochet Braid Hairstyles because I use a technique that makes the style look natural and seamless. I am most proud of the fact that my company is self-made and continues to grow organically by not just social media but word of mouth also. I believe that what sets me apart from others is that I really do have a genuine relationship with every single client. We can literally laugh or cry together. I enjoy seeing each and every individual client and growing with them on their hair journey. Also that I am very punctual with my time and get everyone in and out with no wait.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I am noticing a lot of Hairstylists and Estheticians are moving in a private salon suite setting verses the normal open Salon with Booths. I personally love having a salon suite because my clients appreciate the one on one private service and setting so I believe this will continue to grow over the next five to ten years. I definitely believe the biggest trend right now are Wigs, especially in celebrities. More of my clients are leaning towards wigs because of their versatility and ease. Also, the majority of my clientele are considered “Natural” which basically means no chemicals. This is probably the biggest shift to me of all because I grew up on relaxers and now I am on my 9th year of being completely free of chemicals.
