Today we’d like to introduce you to Jean Baik.
Born on the idea of selling everything for one dollar, Jean launched ShopMissA.com along with her husband, co-founder and CEO Kenneth Baik, in 2013. After getting her bachelors degree from the University of California, Berkeley, Jean attended Parsons School of Design in New York City. After a short career in the fashion industry, Jean packed up and moved to Dallas, Texas where she founded www.shopmissa.com.
A young entrepreneur, the now 31 year old Creative Chief Officer and MISS A founder prides herself on creating a destination that is a “playground for experimentation” with a wide range of cosmetics and accessories that lets the consumer test out new products, colors or trends without spending a fortune to achieve their desired look. “I wanted to bring cosmetics and accessories to people at an affordable price so they can “just have fun” and try out different products and trends without investing so much money.”
In three short years, the brand has expanded to over 100 employees and four million site visitors per month. In August 2013 when the site first opened sales were $8000 that month. Three years later, August 2016 sales were close to $1M per month. In 2016, Jean took her passion for beauty to the next level launching her own line of makeup and tools, AOA Studio. Sticking with her goal of affordable beauty, all products in the AOA Studio line retail for $1.00. Due to an extensive network of factories overseas, Jean is able to produce high quality makeup products while keeping the cost low. Miss A does not spend money on advertising and provides products directly to consumers to provide the best prices.
Miss A opened the first brick and mortar store at the Grapevine Mills mall in May of 2016.The store is highly successful and Miss A plans to open 6-10 more stores within the DFW area by 2019.
Has it been a smooth road?
My husband and I have never operated an e-commerce before so there has definitely been struggles along the way. The first website we built for Shop Miss A, it crashed after 1 month of opening due to high traffic. So we had another developer build a new site and that lasted for only about another 10 months before crashing because of tremendous traffic growth. We are on our 3rd website platform now and its super steady so very happy about that. We are learning everyday while growing our business and it’s been a challenging but fun ride! Looking back to when we first started, and how much we have come along makes the whole team super proud!
