Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeffery Sneed.
Jeffery, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started the company back in 2006. Initially, it was just a hobby to keep me busy after work and on the weekends. My full-time job in network security was for D.R. Horton the #1 homebuilder in America.
Well, 2006 was not a very good time to be a homebuilder. When the housing market tanked the company was looking to make cuts. Since I didn’t have any children and there was a severance package I volunteered. I decided that instead of looking for a new job I would take my severance and my savings and pour myself into my company instead.
As I gained more clients I noticed something. Small businesses had NO idea what IT best practices were, I mean AT ALL. My background was working for companies like Abbott Labs, Microsoft, Saxxon Mortgage and D.R. Horton. All #1 in their industry. So my training and experience was the first thing I utilized when helping SMB’s.
Precisely because these companies do not have huge IT budgets is exactly why the money and time spent should adhere to industry best practices. When properly applied my clients saved time and money and increased productivity. I loved it and I still love it now.
Back then it was just me and a break-fix business model. Something breaks, the customer calls and you roll out to fix it. Over time I saw the flaw in this model. There is no planning, no prevention, no proper maintenance. These networks were not being maintained. So when a component or device failed the customers experienced not only the pain of having to pay to have it fixed and devices replaced they also lost revenue in downtime for their employees.
I began to slowly switch all of my customers over to managed services and bring on more staff to meet customer needs. For a per seat per month fixed rate, the customers no longer had to worry about IT. We proactively monitor their networks and pinpoint problems before they affect the client. We provide continuous 24 patching /anti-virus updates and maintenance to ensure the client’s network and computers are all functioning as efficiently as possible. We are an IT partner, not a provider and that means a lot to us. We take the time to understand their business and tailor our service to meet their needs, most companies do it the other way around.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth? lol, not at all. It’s almost like a bad country song. I have lost a couple of wives and more than a few friends along the way building this business.
Learning to run a company isn’t easy and I have made just about every mistake you can while learning the ropes. The IT part came naturally, payroll, taxes, etc not so much.
Despite the bumps and bruises if you stick with it things get easier and you find the right people to help and put them in positions where their talents lend themselves to your weaknesses.
