Today we’d like to introduce you to Jelicia Harrison.
Jelicia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was always interested in hair. I would go with my mom and watch her get hair done by her beautician, but what really inspired me was the movie Beauty Shop starring Queen Latifah. It was cool to see someone come in with their hair all crazy and leave with their hair laid and flowing down their back. It was like magic to me.
As I got older, I wanted to know how to braid and do my own hair so I taught myself at the age of 12. For the next couple of years, I would practice on my little sister’s hair, perfecting my technique. At age 16, I had my first client. That was the start for me. I saw I what I could do and who I wanted to become as an adult. During my high school years, a few classmates would let me braid their hair on the holiday breaks. In college my friends would let me braid their hair all the time, and that’s where I realized this is my passion. Fast forward a few years later, I have a small clientele that trusts me with their hair and allows me to provide the most convenient but beautiful protective styles worn on a daily basis.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Has my journey been easy? Not at all. Nothing in life worth doing will come easy. There would be times I would compare myself to others, doubt my skills, and sometimes I wanted to throw in the towel. I had to understand that this was all apart of the process. I am still learning to trust my gift, nurture it, and be patient. The main goal is to keep going no matter what. Being an entrepreneur is a challenge indeed, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I learned how important time management plays a huge part in starting everything I do. I work full-time, go to school part-time, and still make time to service my clients outside of it all. Is it difficult? Yes, but I know it is going to be worth it.
We’d love to hear more about Jae’s Beauty.
I am a braider based out of Dallas, Texas. I specialize in providing beautiful yet convenient protective styles such as Box Braids, Marley Twists, Knotless Braids, and more.
What makes me proud is to see my clients smile after I show them the final result of their hair. To women, our hair is EVERYTHING. When you look in the mirror, you should feel like the prettiest woman in the world. It is my job to make that happen.
I would like to believe what sets me apart from everyone is my passion for braiding, and love for hair in general. Yes, I am a braider. However, it is important to make sure I maintain keeping my client’s hair healthy. You do not need a license to braid in the state of Texas. However, I am going to extra mile by attending cosmetology school in order to learn more about different types of hair, product knowledge, the beauty industry, and making sure I provide an amazing experience that each of my clients will never forget.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Currently, my main goal focus is to graduate from school. The next step is becoming a licensed cosmetologist, and take my skills to the next level. Eventually, I would like to open up a salon in Dallas. I look forward to changing lives by slaying one head at a time.
