Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Griffin.
Jennifer, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My family was always sick. Colds, flu, runny noses, sinus infections, basically, if it was going around, we got it. Not only that, but it felt like it took forever for us to get better. We’d get better after a long bout with a cough and then the sick cycle would happen all over again, just days later. It was exhausting. We missed countless days of school, work, parties, and even canceled vacations. We were absolutely miserable. My husband and I would give our kids antibiotics after antibiotics without a second thought. One day my son ended up in the emergency room unable to breath, asthma was the culprit brought on my a cold. Now we added breathing treatments and steroids into the mix. We knew there had to be other options but we were stuck in this crazy cycle of always trying to get healthy.
An old friend and herbalist suggested we try a natural remedy called elderberry. I had never heard of it but hurried off to buy my first bottle of elderberry syrup. It was awful. The syrup was thick and bitter. After some prodding, I took it and promptly threw it up everywhere. I was done. There was nothing that could help. Until that same friend suggested I make the syrup myself. I tried and failed numerous times over three months and then it happened: I created a recipe that everyone loved. My kids willingly took it and begged for more. Friends started asking what we were doing differently. I gave some to my friends and family to try and then random strangers were calling me asking for my syrup. That’s when I knew I had to make this available to everyone! I obtained licensing, started producing in a commercial kitchen and the rest is history!
Has it been a smooth road?
Not necessarily. There is a lot that goes into making elderberry syrup commercially. Doing things, the right way is not always the easiest option. It would be very easy to buy elderberries off a random website and brew in my home but that is not the way I do things. I have carefully sourced each ingredient and even met some of the farmers. The honey I use is raw local honey sourced close to home. Organic, local ingredients are not cheap but they make amazing elderberry syrup, and to me, that is worth it all day long! I use a commercial kitchen and slow brew over the course of a couple of hours, in small batches in order to ensure quality and flavor. The licensing was a slow and expensive process, but very worth it.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
As a company, we pride ourselves on making a great tasting syrup that also works. We slow brew in small batches to get the most potent syrup possible. Our raw local wildflower honey is handpicked to add the perfect sweetness to our recipe. Only the highest quality ingredients make their way into our syrup.
Flo Mo Elderberry Co. is known for putting the customer first. We have customers that are on special diets like KETO or allergic to honey and I make special batches without honey for them. We make other products in addition to our syrup including Immuni-tea elderflower loose leaf tea, plant-based chest rub, congestion ease steam soak, and more. Check out our Facebook page: Flo Mo Elderberry Co. for more info.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, Dallas is a wonderful city to do business. Anyone can take advantage of the benefits of Elderberry syrup. Dallas is health-conscious and open-minded which makes the climate primed and ready to accept the benefits that natural remedies have to offer. I have not run into another business owner that wasn’t willing to help me get started. My advice would be to reach out to others that may have more experience than you. The worst thing they can say is no!

Jen’s stuff is the best! I’ve been buying from her from the start and absolutely can tell a difference when I take the syrup & when I run out! This family is pure, honest and genuine.

Can I buy directly from you? I don’t get to the Coppell Farmers Market that often.
