Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Perry.
Jennifer, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Life started a bit early for me, from becoming a teenager mother by the age of 17 to getting married by the age of 18, undergoing a divorce and giving birth to twin boys all by the age of 23.
With all that I endured at such an early age, feeling like the odds were already against me, I knew then that I had to keep God first and preserve.
I remember working two and three jobs at a time just to make ends meet for my self as well as my children.
The jobs that I did work actually prepared me to be able to run my own business as of today.
I’m very grateful for the opportunities leading up to becoming a business owner. It taught me to respect and appreciate someone else’s business initially.
From being on time to learning how to fraternize with different individuals, to provide world class customer service, as well as being empathetic of everyone’s individual encounters.
My time in Corporate America was not in vain.
After three years of working in the mortgage industry, March of 2013, I grew insanely ill. I was bedridden and on short term disability.
After that traumatic health scare, I had to come to realization that I needed to make some immediate changes.
I said to myself, “Jennifer just pursue a career path in something that you’re naturally talented at.”
I’m a fourth generation cosmetologist within my family. I would always be in the mirror as a young girl doing my hair.
My friends and family would call me to do their hair before events and I simply enjoyed the feeling of making them smile.
May of 2013, I decided to divorce fear and marry faith!
I went up to Regency Beauty Institute, took a tour and by the end of my visit I was signing papers to enrolled into cosmetology school.
I was stoked!! I did it!!! I felt pleased with my decision.
I finally took the necessary steps that would be life-changing for my children and I.
I made it my goal to be completed with cosmetology school within 9months to a year.
After graduating, I went straight into a suite. I was the dedicated hairstylist that was at the salon seven days a week. It became my second home.
After four years of working in a salon setting, it was time for me to move on to something that would allow me to grow independently.
I stepped out on faith to open up my own salon suite September of 2017. It was the BEST decision that I’ve made for my career thus far.
Being a self-made mom-entrepreneur was EXACTLY the change that my children and I needed.
It’s been almost two years since I’ve transitioned and I wouldn’t change it for the world.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Smooth road! Absolutely not! Lol, I can sit back and laugh about a few encounters now because I just knew I had reach my breaking point.
But when I tell you God has favor on my life.
Every time that I felt like giving up, God came through for us.
If I didn’t know what the definition of survival was, I can assure you that I knew what it was during those 12 months of cosmetology school.
I couldn’t work because I had to attend cosmetology school 40 hours a week. I earned those 1500 hours.
I had to be smart as possible with my money.
I had to hustle from servicing clients for tips to selling clothes, purses, jewelry to get me through school.
June 2014 had finally arrived and I was in my last 30 days of graduation when I became short 200.00 on my rent.
I was devastated.
My children and I were faced with an eviction.
Never in a million years would I have thought that I would be faced with being homeless with my three children.
It was tough. I was depressed. I felt like I had finally accomplished something to make a better life for my children and I but it wasn’t anything that I could celebrate knowing that we were going to be homeless.
I prayed to God and sure enough he sent us some help.
I traveled from Lewisville to Mesquite to Duncanville everyday to and from for a whole year so that we could have a place to lay our heads.
I promised my children that as long as I was breathing that we would never encounter this situation again.
God gave me strength, I was obedient and I followed the steps that he ordered for my path…
God blessed us with a house of our own a year later.
