Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Spurlock.
Jennifer, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Let’s start with our business name, as it’s the start of what grew into a beautiful adventure. GREEN: Our philosophy is to create fabulously, yet functional bath & beauty confections using carefully sourced ingredients for the eco-beauty conscious. RIFT: Natural botanicals, plant-based oils and butters are infused with a dash of color without the use of synthetic fillers to create products that captivate your senses.
Starting out in my kitchen, I used my organic chemistry background to understand and formulate bath and body confections for my family to enjoy. In 2012, ‘The Green Rift’ was born. In 2013, I traded in my hazardous chemistry lab coat for one that surrounded me with natural botanicals, plant-based oils and butters, while eliminating filler ingredients, including parabens, phthalates and formaldehydes. I love creating unique bath and body confections with a unique twist while using a rainbow of bright colors.
Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road. As with all new businesses, there are obstacles or struggles that all small businesses must overcome. For us, it was branding and name recognition. Being a small business, we struggled with being found in a ‘giant pond’ with larger corporations and other small businesses offering the same product line. Larger corporations have a bigger budget for branding and advertising, whereas smaller businesses or hobbyists were undercutting our pricing with similar made products.
Being small and new, you have to get creative and be inventive in order to stick out in a crowd. Initially, we started with a very different company name. After setting the course to trademark, we had to overcome the hurdles of other companies having similar wording to our initial company name. In the end, we decided to abandon our initial application and start the process of rebranding to ‘The Green Rift’. Finding the meaning behind the name and putting that meaning to work has helped us carve out a niche market in the beauty world.
With rebranding checked off the list, we started the trademark application again and this time, we prevailed. Name recognition was next to tackle on the list. With this comes developing a brand logo, advertising, understanding social media for business, building a website, etc. all the while still creating fabulous products. In the beginning, we attended many markets, farmer’s markets, holiday events, holiday pop-ups and eventually landing into trade shows to get our company recognized.
