Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Yarbro.
Jennifer, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always had a fascination with photography. In high school, I was that girl that always had a camera with her. Keep in mind this was just before cell phones had a phone attached to them. Every inch of my bedroom wall had a photographed plastered to it. In college, I was at a loss for what I wanted to do in life then a counselor suggested I take a photography class. It had never occurred to me that you could have a career as a photographer. That was the start of a whole new world. In school, I learned how to process and develop my own film. Each day, I went to class was like Christmas morning. I eventually transferred schools to solely focus on photography and ended up at Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California. It was at Brooks that I fully immersed myself in photography. After college, I moved back to Dallas to be closer to my soon to be husband, David. While I was away in California, David was here in Texas studying graphic design. We decided to put our two art forms together and create Jennifer Yarbro Photography. In 2007, David and I shot our first wedding together. Together, we make the perfect pair. We’re able to split our focuses on the wedding day and provide beautiful portraits along with touching candids. We’ve been fortunate enough to shoot weddings throughout Texas and the U.S. along with destination weddings all over the world.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’d say, owning a business is always a struggle. Over the years we’ve seen a change in the photography market. When we first started 10+ years ago there were only a handful of well-known photographers in the area. Today there are hundreds, heck I’m sure thousands of wedding photographers. We have had to ‘reinvent’ ourselves and go back to our roots in order to keep up with the changes. We now shoot a hybrid of film and digital. Film photography is what drew me into the art. So, when the film started to make a comeback in the wedding world it was an easy change for me.
Jennifer Yarbro Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a hybrid photography studio offering film and digital photography. The film has a romantic timeless quality that digital just doesn’t quite have yet. It’s sort of an unspeakable difference but more of a feeling it evokes. We are known for our images that evoke emotion, romantic, are timeless and have an organic feel to them. We get to know our clients so that on the wedding day it’s like hanging out with an old friend. Something we are most proud of is our recognition from fellow planners for the last 7 years. We have been nominated 7 times for Best Photographer of the Year by the AACWP (American Association of Certified Wedding Planners) Dallas chapter.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally define success if my clients are happy with the images and so am I. I am constantly pushing myself to do better. I feel that in order to be successful in life, you can never settle on good enough.
