Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Kincaid.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Our mission began while I was serving as the Program Director for an inpatient hospital. I had to repeatedly witness the low standards of care, lack of care continuum and disjointed industry collaboration offered in most mental health facilities. It was this experience that catapulted me towards our current mission: to relentlessly recreate the standards of community mental health care.
In May 2011, we opened the doors to our first clinic in Burleson, Tx; a 1500 sq ft space offering therapeutic counseling services in Johnson County. It wasn’t long until we received accreditation from the Joint Commission for adding Partial Hospitalization Services. This accreditation allowed Innovative Psychiatric Solutions to begin providing Day Program services. These expanded services allowed us to keep clients out of inpatient hospitals through our innovative multi-level stabilization model. This model is breaking barriers of traditional industry settings.
In 2016, MAM had the honor of launching the first on-campus school program in Texas that stabilizes students on campus rather than pulling them out of school to stabilize them. We have experienced phenomenal results and have many more districts in DFW that are inviting us to launch on their campus’ as well. This program has taken Mind Above Matter to the next level of community advocacy and intervention. The more we can stabilize clients in their own environments – the more we can create safe, happy communities that foster growth and innovation for their residents.
Today, with three clinic locations, and on-campus School Districts programs – we have proven the vision for quality mental health care at the lower levels is fundamental for keeping clients out of inpatient hospital and creating healthy communities.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been anything BUT a smooth road. We have faced every challenge you can in a start-up, plus some. Our biggest challenge is always cash flow. We don’t get paid from insurances for the services we provide for at least 60 – 90 days, sometimes as long as 2 years.
Meanwhile, we have to have enough cash to pay for the employees providing the services long before we get reimbursed for them. This works relatively well, except when there are major, unexpected delays in payment from insurance companies. We can never anticipate these situations either – making running a start-up in the healthcare industry even harder than most in my opinion. Secondly, we deal with major staff burnout and industry level crisis – such as a huge shortage of psychiatric providers, the Affordable Care Act, Obama-Care, etc.
We have also dealt with industry competition moving into our territory. These companies are publicly traded companies and large corporations with huge financial backing. We have none of that! So we have to be very innovative and resourceful in our branding, market positioning, and execution. It’s been excruciatingly hard, but always worthwhile when we see client’s lives changed.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Mind Above Matter – what should we know?
Other than our innovative, collaborative treatment model mentioned earlier- we specialize in innovative programs that fit into what the community needs. We constantly adapt our programs and services in response to specific community needs – whereas large psychiatric hospitals just don’t have the autonomy to do that.
We also pride ourselves on our culture. We work extremely hard to produce a culture of self-care, fun, teamwork and family. In our industry, this is unheard of. There isn’t one competitor that we have that doesn’t face huge challenges in their lack of ability to staff according to what the client needs. This is why you have inpatient deaths in psychiatric hospitals. It’s not because the hospitals can’t keep the clients safe – it’s because the owners are all investors with no clinical licenses, demanding the hospital’s staff at unsafe levels to maximize their profits and pensions at the expense of tragic deaths in our communities. All of our leaders are clinicians and we make it a priority to always make the best clinical decision, regardless of the financial impact. We passionately believe that doing what is best for our clients is always what is best for our company in the long run, even if it might cause short-term losses.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
All of our credit must foremost go to God who has blessed us and provided for us in circumstances that defy all odds and in territories where more established hospitals have failed.
Secondly, our employees have always been the most passionate, dedicated, and selfless group of clinicians and staff that a company could ask for. They have consistently given all of their hearts to their clients and have weathered many storms with us. They passionately believe in our vision of quality health care in our communities, and they consistently sacrifice in order to make our mission a reality. Lastly, our community partners have been there every step of the way. These local MHMR’s, PCP offices, Psychiatrists, Hospitals, Schools, and Insurance Agencies have all played an integral part of our success and growth.
