Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Roberts.
Hi Jenny, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a child, I was fascinated by my mother’s beauty routine. It was a daily ritual that left me in awe. I would sit on the floor of the bathroom and watch her apply all her special lotions and potions and make-up. She was absolutely the most beautiful woman in the world to me. In college, I studied art and fashion. I attended Parsons School of Design in New York City in the summers. Then came a point in college where I felt I wasn’t working toward what was truly in my heart, something was missing.
It was time to try something new and exciting and expand my expertise. I traveled to Hollywood and enrolled in a special FX makeup trade school. I absolutely loved my time there. I learned everything from natural on-screen makeup to bloody, horror FX. I even got to dabble in some alien princess prosthetic pieces. One of my more intense assignments was to draw 500 sets of the perfect eyebrow hair by hair.
I met people from all over the world that had attended this program. After finishing the program, I traveled for several months all over Europe with my new foreign friends, from Israel and Egypt to Paris and Italy. This trip was one in a lifetime.
After my foreign adventures, I came back to Dallas, TX. I worked on some independent films that were filmed in the local area and donated my time doing makeup. It was difficult to get a paying gig without a ton of experience. After roughly a year of looking for my next job on a film set in Dallas, I decided to attend aesthetics school. It was always in the back of my mind, and it was time to pull the trigger.
I attended aesthetics school at Ogle and immediately fell in love. For the first time in my life, I felt deep connections with people by helping them with their skin. It completely fed my soul and I landed my first spa job before I had taken my state board exam.
Over the next several years, I went on to work at, open, and manage many boutique spas all over Dallas such as Klinger Advanced Aesthetics. Eventually, UT Southwestern Medical Center and John Hopkins University got involved and I was asked to join the plastic surgery department at UT Southwestern Medical Center by the Chairman of the department. I had the opportunity to learn laser physics by the one and only, John Hoopman, a highly sought-after laser specialist in the aesthetics field.
While at UT Southwestern, my primary focus was facials and laser treatments for patients pre and post-facial rejuvenation surgery. I traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah to learn lymphatic drainage massage, a technique that helps patients heal faster from surgery, from a woman that was over 100 years old. The techniques and medical-grade skincare knowledge I gained were such a gift for me and my future clients. I worked closely with doctors researching various devices for tightening and fat dissolving, including assisting in writing research papers on skin aging. I was in the thick of learning that skin aging is more than just on the surface. Aesthetic medicine was blowing my mind!
I transitioned from UT Southwestern to a dermatology practice in Frisco that was expanding their practice to include medical-grade skincare, state-of-the-art technology, and aesthetics. Over my 10 years there, I perfected my skills with injections such as botox and fillers, and more laser treatments for all skin types, anti-aging procedures, resurfacing, acne, and other problematic skin conditions—I could not get enough education. It was an extremely busy practice with patents back-to-back, long hours, and weekends, but ultimately the exposure to cutting-edge techniques and treatments brought me to where I am today. After 22 years in the aesthetics business, I am proud to be a sole practitioner with my own business.
I partnered with a brand-new state-of-the-art facility in Dallas called Vansanity. I had briefly discovered this company in the pre-Covid era. When I heard about it, it sounded too good to be true. How could this be real? A place that caters to people like me? A space where I could build my own business and have all the backing, support, and training to treat my clientele. It’s the real thing!
Vansanity has given me all the tools and support I have needed to start and grow my business. I never thought it was even possible. To open a med spa on my own would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Technology is always changing and laser devices are $100,000 and up. Vansanity takes on the capital expenses so I don’t have to. I have never been happier and now I am able to give my clients all of the cutting-edge technology they want and deserve. There is no feeling that compares to being empowered to do your own thing and thrive at it.
Vansanity has given me a new way of life and the owners behind the scenes are near and dear to my heart. I have the place and space to do what I love. I get complete autonomy, flexibility, and profitability. But what gets me out of bed every day, what brings me joy, is connecting with my clients and helping them feel good about themselves. That is everything to me, my ultimate passion. If someone told me I couldn’t do what I do, it would be like not being able to breathe.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I’ve been very lucky and blessed to thrive in this business because esthetics came easily to me. However, owning your own business can be challenging at times. I’m grateful to have the support and encouragement from the owners at Vansanity to guide me through the business side of things. It’s been a long road working for other people but finally reaching this point of working for myself is so gratifying.
As you know, we’re big fans of JR SKINNOVATION SPA. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am an Aesthetician, Senior Laser technician, and Injection Specialist.
I started my own business in November of last year after being in this industry for 22 years. I have worked in boutique spas, plastic surgery clinics, and dermatology offices, and now I work out of Vansanity which is a luxurious and elegant office space for aesthetics.
I specialize in the big picture approach to anti-aging and healthy beautiful skin that changes depending on the season, lifestyle, and age of my clients. I perform luxurious facials, laser treatments, botox, fillers, skin pen, medical-grade skincare, Aqua Gold, chemical peels, derma-planning, lymphatic drainage facial massage, acne treatment, skin resurfacing, CoolSculpting and so much more.
I look at my relationship with my clients as a lifelong partnership. I treat many different types of skin and offer various kinds of treatments. It’s never just one thing that a patient needs. Everyone needs facials to keep your pores clean and your skin glowing. I still have clients that see me from my first aesthetics job 22 years ago. It’s so amazing and very rewarding. I feel so blessed to have found my passion and being able to practice my craft on my own terms.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
Running your own business is hard work. I am at my best when I work out every day, eat right and get enough sleep. But of course, nothing is perfect, right? I have these little notifications that come through my phone and Apple Watch that are su[er motivating and self-loving. One is called ‘I AM’. When the day is long, these little reminders chime in and help to keep me going and smiling.
I follow many fellow aesthetic providers from all over the world on social media to continue to learn, grow and perfect my craft. This industry is forever progressing and I am always looking to give my clients the best technology that is available.
Brené Brown is my favorite! I listen to her podcasts on Spotify called, ‘Unlocking Us’ and ‘Dare to Lead’. Brené is a researcher of shame and vulnerability and it has really helped me to open my heart to my business and my clients.
I love music. I listen to it all the time! Music feeds my soul. On my playlists, you’ll find everything from Sylvan Esso to Phantogram to Rod Stewart.
