Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Tang.
Jenny, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Written from Jimmy’s point of view:
A little about Shipley Do-Nuts Plano: Though we are known as a franchise, we are individually owned and operated, who simply has access to the Shipley proprietary flour mixes and ingredients. Since opening Shipley Do-Nuts Plano in December 2018, we are dedicated to providing customer service and community support, who happens to sell the best and freshest daily handmade variety of donuts, assorted pastries, and savory kolaches. We opened with a drive-thru understanding that everyone is on the move early in the morning. We included an outdoor patio seating that’s great for children and pets.
A little about us personally: My sister, Jenny, and I, left Houston Oil & Gas corporate, are partners in Shipley Do-Nuts Plano. Jenny, her husband and their two boys, moved to the DFW area from Beaumont, TX about a year ago. She has persevered through recent hardships and looking to rebound for her forever home. As college wasn’t the right fit for her, she initially followed family members to Beaumont, TX about 13 years ago for retail work in hopes of owning her first home and giving her children everything to succeed. Both her and her husband would work 12 hour days, six day weeks to finally achieve their dreams of owning a home. After work, she would maintain the house and spend hours doing homework with her boys. She always made time for them, even using her limited vacation days to take her boy to soccer practices and games.
In the Fall 2017, her house was flooded by Hurricane Harvey, where her family was moved out by boat, and she lost almost everything in an instance. Furthermore, the 60+ years small business that she managed faced a competitor, who built a competing store directly across the street a year prior. The decrease in profits from the competition definitely put her job security and everything she had work for in jeopardy. After losing her home and down on her luck, she decided to take me up on my offer of moving to DFW, open a Shipley Do-Nuts in Plano, where we have been welcomed with open arms, to start over and create something better than before.
It has been a little tough starting out as it’s our first venture, working 12-15 hours daily, enduring the lowest unemployment rates, and proximity of the fast-moving 75 Central with limited ways to raise awareness. However, we believe our dedication to our customers by providing the best service along with care in the way we produce do-nuts and kolaches, we will make Shipley Do-Nuts Plano the choice when it comes to breakfast, snack, lunch and dessert. Our hope is to grow the awareness that we are here, then Jenny will fully take over to finally own her own business and putting her boys through school.
My intent is not to get any pity, as my sister and I were always been taught unwavering determination from refugee parents from the Khmer Rouge era, but to inspire anyone who feels down on their luck and raise a little bit of awareness for all the hardworking mothers, wives, and sisters. If this raises awareness to help Jenny reach the dreams I know she deserves, I would be appreciative.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a little tough starting out as it’s our first venture, working 12-15 hours daily, enduring the lowest unemployment rates, and proximity of the fast-moving 75 Central with limited ways to raise awareness. Also, unlike the following that Shipley Do-Nuts has in Houston, we are building that awareness in a new market that’s saturated.
However, we believe our dedication to our customers by providing the best service along with care in the way we produce do-nuts and kolaches, we will make Shipley Do-Nuts Plano the choice when it comes to breakfast, snack, lunch and dessert. As well as our dedication to support the local schools and communities, we have gained substantial support and a core following.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Shipley Do-Nuts Plano – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
A little about us: Shipley Do-Nuts, with a Texas footprint dating back to 1936, specializes in producing fresh traditional yeast-raised do-nuts (glazed and variety of icing and topping), cake do-nuts (buttermilk and blueberry), variety of pastries and savory kolaches. However, Shipley Do-Nuts Plano is brother-sister locally owned and operated with a dedication to providing excellent customer service and community support, who happens to sell your best and freshest handmade everyday do-nuts. We have the resources and capabilities to provide a fresh breakfast experience to the masses like no other!
We understand that mornings are usually business, rushed and tough, so we want to do what we can to put a smile on everyone’s face.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Our expectation is to use our current 75/Park location to build a family-oriented brand that is known for the best customer service and community involvement while providing the best handmade daily do-nuts and savory kolaches. We want a reputation where we gain community trust that will support a second, and a third, and a fourth,….location.
