Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy LaRue.
Jeremy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always had a love for photography, but I didn’t always have the ability or skill set to make anything of it. When I was a senior in high school, I worked on the yearbook and started to develop my photography skills. Then, came to college. In Florida, I studied to become an Aerospace Engineer and bought my first SLR camera. For the most part, I used that camera to take photos on trips or of my friends but lacked the resources to learn and develop film all the time. After graduating, I moved back to Texas and began working as a high school science teacher.
One of the great advantages of teaching is having time outside of the school year to focus on other pursuits. At the end of 2013, I bought my first DSLR and started to learn a lot about photography. I do travel quite a bit when I’m not teaching, and I got to take photos of some really neat places. I learned more about composition, seeing light, and how to make strong images. I then began to shoot senior photos for my students. Nowadays, I still shoot seniors, family portraits, the occasional wedding, and corporate photos, but I primarily work with models. I really enjoy working with creative people to realize a vision and create something that is beautiful.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There are always challenges when pursuing anything worthwhile. My biggest challenges have always been self-doubt, creative blocks, and motivation. I have a very analytical background and mentality so, it has always been a struggle to push beyond that barrier and open up creatively. One of the best parts of photography for me is having that creative outlet.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Jeremy LaRue Photography – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
My photography business is not specialized to any one field. That is something that I have tried to keep. I work with people from all kinds of different backgrounds and try to let their story be told through imagery. I like to develop concepts and ideas to suit the needs of my clients, and then bring them to life.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I plan to go with the flow of photography. It has opened up many doors and I have met several interesting people and had experiences that I wouldn’t have had without it. I’ve recently started working with a few musical artists, and while different than what I have done in the past, it does bring up some new opportunities.
