Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Mercer. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Jeremy Mercer was born and raised in Irving, Texas. He grew up in the DFW area but left for Lubbock to become a Red Raider at Texas Tech University. At Texas Tech, Jeremy earned his BBA in Finance with a Real Estate emphasis. When Jeremy wasn’t playing center for Tech’s football team or training, he worked for his dad’s steel company, Mercer Metals, and he also trained high school athletes for UIL.
After graduation, Jeremy started buying houses, chasing foreclosures and began his real estate career in commercial property management. His older brother, Jeff, was in the commercial real estate industry as well. In October 2010, Jeff convinced Jeremy to become a broker, and he has never looked back. Jeremy says that a large contributor to his path toward real estate was that he has always had a very close relationship with his brother, and they have always taken on ventures together.
Jeremy is currently the Vice President of Mercer Company and CEO of Matador Capital. In this past year, Jeremy has achieved his greatest real estate deal thus far. He transacted a simultaneous four-way, 200-acre land deal which was a high-stress period where a lot of money was at risk, and it required a lot of people to perform outside of his control. Jeremy has taken away a lot of valuable knowledge and experience from this and gained a mastery of how to leverage buyers and sellers in specified situations. He not only has this large land acquisition under his belt, but his company, Matador Capital, currently has $105M assets under management, did $91M in acquisitions from 2021-2022, and owns 890K SF of real estate. Jeremy also likes being in the thick of the deal and figuring out what to do and where to go. He shines in his ability to navigate challenging or seemingly unconquerable situations.
Jeremy looks forward to continuing to build his business that competes at the level of institutions. Jeremy loves being the underdog from Irving because people tended to miscalculate him, but now, he has made it to the top and carries a reputable portfolio that continues to prove his work ethic and drive. Another aspect of Jeremy’s career that he finds great passion in is his opportunity to educate young brokers and anyone interested in private equity transactions. He enjoys teaching and helping people learn how to own and invest in real estate.
Outside of his career and real estate, his biggest accomplishment and the thing he is the proudest of is his family. He met his wife and business partner, Tammine, at Tech, and together they have two incredible kids, Barrett and Layla. Additionally, Jeremy has a few fun hobbies and skills. He is in a member band called Trinity Junction where he sings and plays the piano and guitar, and also owns a rehearsal studio for aspiring musicians.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As Jeremy progressed through his real estate path, he decided to further challenge himself and purchase Mercer Metals from his father. He operated the business concurrently and learned invaluable lessons as he was exposed to embezzlement from a disloyal partnership. This severe obstacle proved to be an immense challenge to recover from, and it lay in Jeremy’s hands to rebuild a company that was no longer bankable. Jeremy did what any respectable owner/operator would do and got his hands dirty. He took on more duties, effectively rebuilt his team, found bigger customers, strategized buying, and even learned how to weld. From the lowest of lows to the highest of highs, Jeremy brought that company out of the trenches and truly understands the monetary and arduous process of owning and operating a business. This once-bad poker hand inadvertently propelled Jeremy into the industrial market and gave him an edge over his competitors.
