Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerry Dawson, CPA.
Jerry, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Taxcare Affiliates was initially founded in 2014 by my accountant colleague and wife, Nicky, providing tax services to individuals only. She saw a need to educate friends and family in our community about taxes. I was working full-time and working on my passing my CPA exam to become a certified public accountant at the time. In 2018, an opportunity presented itself for me to take over the business from my wife and convert it to a full-service accounting firm providing not only individual tax preparation services but also business taxes for every business entity, tax planning, accounting & bookkeeping services, business advisory services, and QuickBooks setup as well as training. Word of mouth referrals from current clients has helped us grow to where the company is now. Taxcare Affiliates serves clients all over the U.S. and provides IRS representation for clients in Texas. Taxcare Affiliates consists of CPAs, accountants, and bookkeepers with over 22 years of public and private industry experience providing invaluable service while partnering with entrepreneurs and small businesses.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road has not been smooth because it is one thing to be a subject matter professional but another to run a startup business. The struggles we faced were nothing out of the ordinary. Still, we had to learn how to market our accounting firm services while staying compliant with the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy guidelines for advertising as a CPA, implement processes for client intake, decide whether it is best to hire employees or independent contractors, and figuring out the ideal location to help facilitate foot traffic by current and potential clients. All entrepreneurs deal with the same struggle of having to deal with the business 24/7 as there is no clocking in and out as a startup company trying to grow. I believe the most significant struggle or issue that Taxcare Affiliates faced is learning how not to take on too much based on our capacity while continuing to find ways to grow.
Tell us more about the business.
Taxcare Affiliates is an accounting firm that specializes in helping small businesses produce accurate financial records through proper accounting methods, training bookkeepers to adhere to GAAP for our clients, being QuickBooks proadvisors training small business owners to get the most out of QuickBooks, offering business advisory services such as figuring out the most tax-advantageous entity structure for clients and setting that up for them, and being subject matter professionals in all business tax filings. As for our company, I am most proud of the fact that we serve as a partner to our clients to help empower them to run their businesses more efficiently and effectively. We pride ourselves on providing convenience through technology, professionalism through service, and education through products for all of our clients. What sets us apart is that we are a family-owned business, relatable, and more concerned about the quality of the product we give to our clients than the price we charge.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see the accounting industry, especially for entrepreneurs, to continue to grow as most businesses are run remotely and using cloud based services more than ever. There will always be a need in this industry as long as businesses need financial reports and tax returns taken care of to stay compliant with the IRS and GAAP reporting requirements as well as wanting to delegate these tasks to accounting firms to handle. With the COVID-19 pandemic, I do think it may shift more accounting/tax jobs to being handled remotely or allowing more flexibility in that regard which is an excellent opportunity for our business which has significant business done remotely.
