Meet Jerry Mooty of @properties Christie’s International Real Estate

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerry Mooty.

Hi Jerry, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Jerry W. Mooty, Jr. is the Chief Executive Officer and Principal of Dallas’ newest real estate brokerage firm, @properties Dallas. Jerry has been a noteworthy leader in Dallas’ real estate scene for more than two decades through his work as an attorney, residential and commercial developer, investor, and broker. Jerry’s extensive real estate knowledge and passion for the Dallas community led him to recognize the opportunity to bring strong local ownership and the @properties tech-driven solutions to the Dallas market. As a result, Jerry launched @properties first Texas franchise in 2021. In the first quarter of 2022, @properties acquired Christie’s International Real Estate. The Dallas group was rewarded the Christie’s affiliation making the brand global. Prior to launching @properties Dallas, Jerry served as the Director of Strategy for one of the largest independently owned real estate brokerages in Texas and led a dynamic team of professionals that handled residential, commercial, and global relocation transactions. Jerry and his partner, Piper Young, lead the Piper+Mooty Real Estate group focusing on luxury, residential, new developments and custom home builds.

I started my professional career as a litigation attorney and shortly realized I needed to own my own firm. In 1998, I founded McCathern Mooty, a litigation boutique with 3 other lawyers including my founding partner Levi McCathern. From 1998 until my departure in 2012, I served as the managing partner and directed the growth of the firm to 60 lawyers in 4 cities. I was eager to be an entrepreneur so I sold my interest back to the partnership in 2012 and started several ventures including credit card processing ISO, youth sports technology roll-up, digital health care platform, and finally joined a Silicon Valley tech company as the Chief Business & Legal Officer to help build out their leadership team in Dallas and finalize a Series A raise.

Once that funded, I took the Chief Strategy Officer position for the largest independently owned real estate brokerage in Texas to launch my real estate career (I did have a real estate development company for 6 years building houses and commercial projects while the managing partner of the law firm). From there, I negotiated to bring the 8th largest real estate brokerage to Texas called @properties which I launched in July 2021. We were granted the Christie’s International Real Estate affiliation in March 2022 and are now at 40 agents in Dallas and Frisco.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way?  Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Bringing a new luxury brand into a hot Dallas market has been exciting and challenging. The exciting part has been the people and the agents involved who have jumped at the opportunity to create something special. I wouldn’t have agreed to do this if it wasn’t the right partnership with our corporate relationship. I can’t say enough about @properties, their corporate leadership, and all the knowledge they have brought our “new” @franchise. They have made the challenges easy to overcome with heavy support and training of our team. I am an entrepreneur so some of the challenges are what make it fun. I would say the biggest lesson learned is building the type of culture we want requires everyone believing in the vision and participating in the growth. It takes a lot of effort to get things the way we want them but I feel we have done a great job getting the culture in place based on the people we have hired and the agents we are supporting.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about what you do?
We are an independently owned real estate brokerage focused on luxury residential and commercial representation. We also handle global relocation and farm & ranch transactions.

The @properties brands stem from the largest brokerage in the Midwest which purchased Christie’s International Real Estate division from Christie’s Auction House in December 2021. Needless to say, we are now global and I love our brand.

We currently have 40 agents in the DFW metroplex and continue to grow offices in Dallas, Frisco, and are in negotiations to add via acquisitions, merger, or walk-over, offices in Ft. Worth and Plano.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Outside of my career, my family is very important to me and makes me the happiest at the end of the day. I have two sons, Val and Luke, and a beautiful wife named Samantha. Val and Luke are both students at the University of Texas at Austin and Samantha is a middle school counselor at Highland Park Middle School. Outside of family, sports play a big role in my life, especially the Dallas Cowboys.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
We are a very social industry so we leverage all the main social channels to sell ourselves and our clients” properties. LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. We also use tools and apps that only our agents with @properties are privy to through a proprietary technology called Pl@tform. This sets our agents apart and has been the biggest recruiting tool.
