Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Kramer.
Jessica, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started teaching swimming when I was 16 years old. I volunteered with the Dallas Visually Impaired Center and helped teach blind children to swim. After my freshman year at SMU, I started teaching with Dixie Masino-a legendary Dallas swimming instructor. I taught with Dixie for 3 years and when she moved to Florida she chose me to take over the business. Now 26 years later, I still love teaching swimming to kids! I have taught thousands of kids and can still remember all of them and now I am teaching some of their kids. I love nothing more than seeing a child swimming across the pool when they were afraid to even get in on the first day of class.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not always been a smooth road. There is that difficult child, that demanding parent and that assistant you thought would be great and totally disappoints you. However, the good far outweighs the bad.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Swimmers by Jessica – what should we know?
Swimmers by Jessica has been teaching kids to swim for the last 26 years. We believe that learning to swim should be a fun experience. That’s why we play games and reward everyone at the end of their lessons. After 26 years we have found that every child learns better when they are having fun.
We are very proud of the thousands of kids who now love to swim because they learned with us. What sets us apart is our small classes and commitment to make learning fun and not scary.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Swimmers by Jessica is definitely not a one person show. Dixie Masino was an incredible mentor.
My husband and my daughters also deserve a lot of credit-their support is what has kept me going. My parents allowed me to teach in their pool when I first got started. My sister has taught most of my private lessons for years. My friend Taylor, has helped grow my business by offering yoga classes in the yoga studio (aka my garage) in conjunction with my swimming classes for the last 8 years. My swimmers’ parents have built my business by recommending me to their friends. All of the assistants I have had-ranging from my sisters, best friends, my daughters, my friend’s kids and even kids I have taught have all helped build this business.
