Meet Jett Platt of Jett Platt Music in Plano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jett Platt.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jett. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born not so unique because I have an identical twin. I have shared most everything from birth but my musical ear. It was a wedding at age 12 that I played a George Winston song on piano for a family member that my music career began. Several weddings later, I still love them. Everyone is happy at a wedding. My mom says it’s cool how many wedding albums have my picture with a bride and groom.

When my cousin died in a car wreck a few years ago, I sat down at the piano and wrote my first original score. It was haunting and beautiful and I’m not sure where the cords came from, unless from him. The song “Without You” was the first of many originals I have written and continue to write in my pursuit of the great song writer.

Just to back track a little I was born in Presbyterian Plano Hospital and at the time we were the largest identical boys they had delivered at 6.2 and 6,1 lbs. My mom named me Jett Grant Platt after John Travolta’s son Jett and my great grandfather Arvel Grant. My brother Riley Parks Platt was named after a girl and our other great grandfather John Parks. That still makes me laugh! Our last name comes from my father who has not been in our life much. I do give credit to him to introducing me to the piano. It was him that pushed learning the cords on an old keyboard he had bought me. God did give me my Dad’s gift of a musical ear to play anything I hear. As the saying goes, “take what you got and make it better”. I practiced everything from Ukulele to guitar to harmonica to drums because I wanted to excel beyond my dad’s talents. All instruments fascinated me. I continued my wedding singer career through school. I currently live in Plano Texas, go to school at Collin College and pursue a career as a musician. I am very lucky my mom chose to live in an area that “loves” to hear music and has many avenues of opportunities.

On most any week or weekend night you can catch me as a regular at a local patio or happy hour playing on my acoustic and keyboards for all genres and generations. Texans love music. Although I am more of folk rock singer the most requested songs tend to be country rock so throw out a song and I’ll sing it.

There’s a circuit of young musicians like myself making a living playing at restaurants, festivals, corporate events, private parties, etc. If Oklahoma or Wisconsin calls though, I head that way to share my sound. It’s not as much of a starving artist career any more with this generation loving music and timeless artists. The entertainment industry has combined food and music so much that they intertwine into great places to go chill and listen to tunes.

I have walked the long line of American Idol and The Voice and made it through several other amazing voices but not to the stage yet. Whether that is in my cards or writing great songs for amazing voice, I just hope to raise a family in the Texas area while singing my songs for happy couples and happy customers.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest struggle would also be my gift. Because I play by ear I cannot seem to connect to reading music. It would be great to pick up a sheet of music and just play it, but how cool is it to hear a song and just play it. There are limitations without music theory experience. I am the 10 year old that taught himself how to play piano on an old keyboard. The 12 year old that taught himself how to play acoustic on a toy ukulele. It’s almost like I came out of my room one day and said “mom listen!” I was not blessed with a great vocal tone either so this seriously took years of training my voice and practicing and wanting to get better. There is not room for shame in “sour” note when you are a singer in training.

Jett Platt Music – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Jett Platt Music is my singer songwriter performer business. I play live music for everything from weddings to upscale corporate events. I entertain at happy hours and music events, the background ambiance at wineries and dinner parties. You can book me as the warm up to a band or the highlighted “love” music for a vow renewal or surprise party.

My connection to audiences is what I’m most proud of. I see little shy kids shock their parents when they come up to me on stage and want to sing with me. Older gentlemen after I sing a Van Morrison or James Taylor song, tell me about what the song reminds them of. All ages respond to my music which is the coolest part of my sound.

I am young but an old soul.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I will always have to say being a part of so many weddings. I have played for young couples, same sex couples, vowel renewals, the youngest of heart and the seniors living out their life in new love they’ve discovered. Playing a bride down the aisle to Canon D will never stop giving me chill bumps.
