Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Asbill.
Jill, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My husband, Brent, and I have five boys, three of which we adopted in 2017. We homeschool and live on a mini farm. Yep, we are that family right down to our full sized van, who we call Bertha. We feel faith and family are everything.
In early 2018 I wanted to find ways to be a better steward of what God had given us while helping supplement my husband’s income so that he could be home more. I’ve always been a bit of a dreamer, maker, crafter…… Or as Brent likes to say, I have harebrained ideas. Thus…The Hare & The Hatter Homestead came to be.
Our youngest son has some health issues that required him to have a nurse in our home. We were so very fortunate to have two of the best home health care nurses around. And I truly feel without them our little guy would not be doing as well as he is today. These ladies have become like family to us. One of them taught me to crochet in February of 2018 and for some reason, it just clicked and I could not get enough of it.
In April of that year I started an Instagram and Facebook page where I could showcase our farm, bread baking, & crochet projects I was working on. My style is all over the place. I love unicorns, baking, farm life, books, glitter, tattoos, & anything beard related. I also have a small obsession with coffee, Pyrex, & yarn. You will see all of this reflected in my business, which gives it the Eclectic Farmhouse vibe.
Since starting the IG & FB pages slowly but surely orders for eggs, breads and crochet goodies have rolled in. As they have picked up the momentum, I opened an Etsy Shopify in 2019 and just this year, I have started thehareandthehatterhomestead.com.
I absolutely love working with my hands and the challenges of starting new projects. I am so blessed and humbled that I can use the talents God has given me to bring joy to others, whether it be with yarn or baking ingredients, all the while helping my family be able to spend more time together.
Has it been a smooth road?
I think the biggest challenge is just prioritizing and finding a balance. Over the past couple of years, I have become a fairly good Chaos Coordinator. Setting and keeping a good schedule is a must. Unexpected things happen, but having a good foundation helps things run smoothly.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am the Chaos Coordinator behind The Hare & The Hatter Homestead. I create all kinds of handmade crochet items ranging from unicorns, cactus potholders, coffee mug sleeves, scrunchies, beanies to fashion accessories and anything in between. I pour myself into each piece and love the eclectic feel each piece has. I also love baking and offer a variety of breads each week alongside special orders at least once a quarter that includes cinnamon rolls and mini bundt cakes.
I’m so proud of how far this little business has grown in almost two years and can’t wait to see where it goes from here. I think what sets The Hare & The Hatter Homestead apart is the Eclectic Farmhouse feel. There is a little bit of me in each piece I create.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that all the facets of Dallas blend so well together. There is something for everyone here. It doesn’t matter if you are looking for a small coffee shop, bookstore, skate shop, family attraction, tattoo parlor, 5-star restaurant, or a place to get a piece of the pie. Not to mention Cafe Brazil, my favorite place to eat and drink coffee, is there in Deep Ellum.
Who else deserves credit – have you had mentors, supporters, cheerleaders, advocates, clients or teammates that have played a big role in your success or the success of the business? If so – who are they and what role did they plan / how did they help.
God- I’m so thankful for the talents and abilities he has given me along with the opportunity to share them with others.
Brent- for believing and supporting all of my harebrained ideas.
The Boys- for not being to mad at me while crocheting through movie nights.
My Mom & Daddy Dave- for believing in and encouraging me.
Jack & Sheila- for telling anyone and everyone you come in contact with about The Hare & The Hatter Homestead even if it’s the 100th time and they are sick of hearing about it.
The Aunts & Leah- for encouraging, supporting and sharing The Hare & The Hatter Homestead with others.
Erika- for teaching me how to crochet!
