Meet Jim Jaco of Jaco Consulting in Carrollton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Jaco.

Jim, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started in the uniform rental industry right out of college. G&K Services, the largest uniform rental company in the country, placed me in sales and I was the No. 1 sales rep in the country. I was chosen to help write the first sales training manual, and later promoted to my first management position as a service manager. That was it: I had found my passion in life — put the pieces together of a team to reach goals. I had always been involved in sports in high school and college, so working as a team was a natural extension of my career.

I was recruited to Aramark Uniform Services to help write a sales training and service training manual for the company. After a year, I was given my first stand-alone operation: a small unit in Albuquerque, N.M. I received hands on experience in all phases of the business: sales, service, operations, inventory control and administration. My team and I doubled the size of the company in revenue and increased net profit by 300 percent.

I was promoted to a larger operation in Los Angeles, a new acquisition. I helped convert it from a mom and pop business to a corporate-run entity by hiring and training a new sales force, installing policies and standard operating procedures for all areas of the business. I was promoted to the Dallas operation – which brought me back home to Dallas, for the next seven years. There I managed all aspects of the business.

Next up was my first experience doing business consulting: a two-year contract with a large national company to turn around its operation. After that success, I was recruited to the largest consulting company in the U.S., ISI, which was working strictly with small-to-medium-sized businesses.

After 12 years as a top consultant and project manager I got tired of the travel and decided to come back to Dallas and start my own company. A major side benefit is that by then, my children had started delivering me some grandbabies and I could spend more time with them.

Has it been a smooth road?
I have been working with small and mid-size businesses for over 25 years. I anticipated the kinds of struggles I would face starting my own business: investment capital, cash flow, finding consultants and staff that shared my passion of helping companies be successful – and the big one of finding sales and marketing professionals. Having helped hundreds of businesses, it gave me a better starting point of putting together a business plan that would help me be successful.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am most proud of the expert consultants and staff we employ. We are all passionate about working with small and mid-size companies to put all the pieces of the puzzle together to help them improve their profits.

No matter the size of the company, every business has a three-legged stool consisting of sales (what we do), operations (how we do it) and administration (how we keep score and manage the money of the company). Running a business is more complex with all its moving parts. If we can make sure all the legs are strong and support each other, then the seat of profit that is being supported will be strong.

What sets us apart is our experience. We have many years’ experience working with companies across the country and sharing ideas we have put into place to help companies become more profitable. All our consultants are local, which means our services are more affordable because there is no travel expenses built into our fees.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I am a little prejudiced because I grew up in Dallas. I have worked in every state in the country, including Hawaii and Alaska, and I feel Dallas is the friendliest, most welcoming area with one of the strongest economies to be found around the country.
