Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Cribbins. 

Hi Joe, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I always wanted to be a surgeon. I first became interested in bariatric surgery during my residency at Northwestern in Chicago, IL. It is the most exciting field of medicine. Patients come in overweight with comorbidities ranging from diabetes, sleep apnea, arthritis, erectile dysfunction, high blood pressure, infertility, arthritis, high cholesterol, and a pile of medications. within weeks to months after weight loss surgery patients are off their medications and lose a significant amount of weight that allows them to lead the healthy active life they want, and that is very exciting for me as a clinician. 

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a smooth road with many changes along the way. Surgery has had tremendous advances that have led to safer surgery with better patient outcomes. I first learned open bariatric surgery, then minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, and now we had ultra-minimally invasive DAVINCI robotic surgery that provides the surgeon with 3DHD and instruments that extend beyond that of the human hand for a more precise surgery. My job has become easier with these exciting advances and patients love the results. 

We’ve been impressed with Texas Center for Bariatrics & Advanced Surgery, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We specialize in bariatric/weight loss surgery and exclusively use the state-of-the-art DAVINCI surgical system that costs 1.8m. I started using this advanced technology, which eclipses laparoscopic surgery, over a decade ago and I look forward to operating every day on it. I am a top 5 bariatric surgeon in Texas for volume, safety, and patient results. Being highly experienced with this technology has patients coming to us from Dubai and Alaska for surgery. 

We are most proud of treating patients like family. We have an office dog that puts people at ease in the clinic and he makes rounds on patients at two of our hospitals. We offer a full bariatric surgery program utilizing DAVINCI including gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, lap-band, SADI, duodenal switch, and bariatric revisional surgery along with medical weight management We really love our patients and host local bariatric patient meetups and travel the country with Marty at patient and hospital events.

I have 5 kids and 4 dogs… and yes that’s a lot of dogs.
