Today we’d like to introduce you to John Botefuhr.
John, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I graduated college at the University of Oklahoma in 1992 with a degree in psychology. I worked in several hospitals and acute care treatment centers. I really felt drawn to a career that tried to help people. However, after several years, the psych field became increasingly frustrating. At one point, I had a patient yelling at me that the reason for all her problems was my fault. She had gotten injured in a car wreck and the hospital started them on opioids. After several months, she was addicted and then, was readmitted into the psych care floor. It was a jarring moment and I really thought she had a point. Patients came in with physical pain and then were moved into psych pain after becoming addicted. I wanted to move into a different field and had been acquainted with chiropractic but I also had the opportunity of working as a physical therapist aid in New Mexico at St. Vincent’s Hospital. I had a great experience, but I felt it was more independence as a chiropractor. To me, it was a way to help people without trying to navigate the complicated phase of psychology and medication and without the politics of institutionalized medicine. I moved to Los Angeles in 1994 and after a brief stint of working on movie sets with a set dresser and set construction, I enrolled in chiropractic college. After graduating in 2000, I moved back to my hometown of Dallas and began working in clinics. I became the medical director of several clinics and then eventually the head director of a multi-clinic company. In 2009, I started my own business, taking over a company and in 2011 moved to the facility where I am today. At this point, I’ve been practicing for 18 years as a doctor of chiropractic. I try to be involved in my community and am on the board of our local Chamber of Commerce.
Has it been a smooth road?
Being a doctor and also a small business, I can’t say it’s ever been really smooth. Chiropractic college was extremely difficult and a study was very intense, however, it did not prepare you for the rigors of owning and running a business. Everything from negotiating a lease, the build-out of the facility, deciding on phone systems, advertising, marketing, etc. many of that is still a struggle today. In fact, I just had to hang up with AT&T because I’m having telephone problems this week.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Adjust Chiropractic story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a chiropractor. I specialize in functional movement the body and treatment for musculoskeletal injuries, imbalances, and dysfunctions using chiropractic care that includes exercise rehab and various therapies that do not include taking prescription medication. Basically, we take a conservative approach to health and try to get people feeling better for nonemergency musculoskeletal problems whether from an accident, sports injury or any other reason.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I just returned from a conference in Kansas City and I am really excited about the future of my profession. There is a definite place for the treatment of aches and pains for people who want to avoid taking medication or invasive surgeries. Now, insurance companies are seeing the value of conservative management of low back pain and muscle-skeletal pain as science is showing that it is just as if not more effective than medication and surgeries and is also much cheaper.
