Today we’d like to introduce you to John Bress.
Hi John, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Well, no one really chooses to be painter….atleast no one I’ve met. My father is a painter and my grandfather was a paint chemist. Painting is in my blood!
However, I did not want to be a painter. I had other aspirations a chef, a veterinarian, not a painter. God had other plans.
I became addicted to drugs at a very young age. My addiction progressed, I got kicked out of school and started painting during that time. I continue doing painting work in the midst of my addiction until I can no longer work at all due to how bad it got.
I went to several institutions.I was incarcerated, and then I landed at a place called the men of Nehemiah in south Dallas.
I got clean in 2018. From that point on, I have been zoning in on my skill of painting as well as running the painting business. This is really the only trade that I’ve ever known. And so I knew for me to make a living, this is what I needed to get better at every day.
There’s been ups and downs along this journey, but I am extremely proud of the skill that god has allowed me to learn. And to get better at every single day, we happily serve clients across the d f w metroplex, and we do everything with excellence to worship god by the work we do.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No way. Overcoming addiction is huge. Pertaining business, there is a lot of competition out there. There’s a painting company. It seems on every block everyone or most try to be the cheapest bidder. We cannot afford to be the cheapest and be the best. Therefore, we chose to be the best. Competition can be challenging however, we love a challenge!
Running a pie shop is completely different than baking pies. Another challenge for us has been just learning. How to run a business successfully Hiring people that we trust, paying them a fair wage, making sure that every client is beyond satisfied, managing the books, taxes etc. Just because we are good. Painters did not mean that we knew how to run a fruitful painting company and that was definitely an obstacle. And something we were grateful to learn
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a faith based christ centered residential painting company. Every person that is inside of our client’s homes has a powerful testimony of redemption and recovery in their life. Not one job is subbed out to a random group of people that we don’t know. This means that we are an employee based residential painting company, which is not the normal. We like that.
We pray before every job and we do not serve our clients. We serve God by the work we do this Ensures that every single client is treated the exact same way with dignity and respect.
We are different in more ways than one. We are a painting company with a purpose. We train every new man that comes aboard our company to learn this trade. The appropriate way the correct wayAll of our painters are well.Versed, in primer’s products, application techniques equipment that way they can communicate to our clients why we do things the way we do.
We specialize in cabinet, refinishing interior exterior painting, tape and bed texture, matching stain etc. We know what we do and we know what we don’t do.
We are proud of our faith foundation.
Quality Work.
Honest People.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Mentors are pivotal for success. Not just in business but in every area. I qualify people who can sow into my life with some simple questions.
1. Do they have something i want (are they fruitful in an area i am not)
2. Do they have noble character? (Honest, direct, kind etc.)
3. Do they have the time etc to speak to me and mentor
If these questions are answered correctly that’s my mentor for a specific area. I do not take council about marriage from a successful business man who is divorced. However, i do take business council. It takes courage to just go up and ask, to just call a billboard to try and speak to the owner. That’s what I’ve done and I still do. I called a billboard 3 days ago and spoke to the owner. This works
