Meet John Layne

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Layne.

Hi John, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After years of procrastinating about writing a book, I decided to take action and enrolled in a novel writing class offered through the Continuing Education department at Collin College. After two successful writing courses, I began writing the manuscript for my debut novel “Gunslingers, A Story of the Old West” in 2016. Three years later, in September of 2019, after landing a publisher, “Gunslingers” was released, and my company John Layne Fiction LLC was created.

After securing an agent and new publisher, Labrador Publishing, I followed up with the second book in the series “Red River Reunion.” I quickly followed with a 2nd Edition of “Gunslingers” in 2020. Both books were honored with multiple awards. The third book in the series, “Return to Canyon Creek” fell victim to delays caused by the pandemic but was released in August of 2022 to rousing reviews.

In addition, I expanded my writing to include screenplays with a feature script based on “Red River Reunion” and a short film titled “A Dark Destiny,” which was completed and is now on the film festival circuit.

I also began my acting career in earnest with appearances in the hit Paramount series 1883, Lifetime Network’s “Text Me When You Get Home,” and other forthcoming films. This expanded my business, and thus John Layne Entertainment LLC was formed.

I am completing my first contemporary western novel, “A Rude Reception,” and another short film screenplay titled “Just Before Midnight.”

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like most other businesses, the past couple of years has been a struggle due to the covid pandemic and subsequent dramatic change in the cost of doing business.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As stated previously, I’m in the entertainment business, which includes being an author of both historical and contemporary Western Fiction, screenplay writing, and acting. I’m most known for my historical Western fiction book series and for appearing in the series 1883 and the lead in the film “A Dark Destiny.”

I’m most proud of the three multi-award-winning novels I’ve written: “Gunslingers,” “Red River Reunion,” and “Return to Canyon Creek,”

What sets me apart from other entertainers is that I write the original story, followed by the script, and then produce and act in the projects. My participation is multi-dimensional.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory has to be playing youth baseball from age 9 through 16.
