Meet John Ortega

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Ortega.

Hi John, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Oh…where to begin? Skipping the “born when the moon was full” story…I started my career in performance at a young age. I’ve been a handful of stage plays ranging from Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol to Arthur Miller’s American Clock. After theater, I decided to focus on music. Of course, like every kid watching his or her favorite bands play, I thought I could be one of those guys who makes it. I had fun playing in front of tens of people…Seeing as how this was an industry that did not forgive for even the smallest of mistake, I decided to add a few skills to my skillset. I learned about audio production and briefly worked with one of Fort Worth’s best studios, First Street Audio. After life got in the way, I took a long break from production, performance, etc. I focused on my family. That has been the most rewarding journey; even with all the ups and downs. Having the experiences that come with family, life, etc. I recently decided to leave the corporate world and start my own production company. Getting back into film making/performance proved to be the best decision I’ve made; professionally speaking of course. I’ve had many successes winning a few awards for film. This is only the beginning…

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Struggles…where to begin? Coming up the film ranks in the manner that I have…I’ve seen many struggles. All of which have shaped me into the professional that I am. I’ve had the pleasure of working with many people who have provided many avenues to learn…even if they’ve been hard lessons. I’ve met several people who’ve been nothing but supportive. I generally don’t dwell on the struggles other than to recount them during breaks on sets or story time with other crews.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At the end of the day, I would best describe myself as a film maker. I’ve been most recently involved in editing work, but I also gaff, direct, act, produce, etc. I’m most proud of my first completed short doc, Cracking the YouTube Code; which has been selected in a few festivals.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Always work on your craft. Never think you know enough or have enough experience. Someone is ten times better than you are…find that person and learn.
