Meet Joi Bailey of Sinners Tattoo Studio in Highland Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joi Bailey.

Joi, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always had a passion for art. When I was a little kid I knew I wanted to be an artist. After I got my second tattoo I knew that tattooing was going to be my career path. In 2016 I found an apprenticeship at Dark Age Tattoo studio and never looked back. I went from tattooing on pig skin, to tattooing my friends for free, then slowly taking walk-ins. After building up my walk-in clientele I was booked for a while.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Most of the struggles stemmed from my apprenticeship. We had about 20 artists at the shop. I spent countless late nights cleaning up after them and doing whatever they asked of me. I spent so much time at the shop I didn’t have time for anything else. I missed out on a lot of family events and friends’ birthdays.

My back is all kinds of messed up from tattooing and the stress that comes with it. I feel like a 50-year-old woman trapped in a 24-year-olds body sometimes. But it’s ok because I make a lot of money. So one day I’ll just buy myself a new back.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sinners Tattoo Studio Story. Tell us more about your work.
I recently started tattooing at a new shop called Sinners Tattoo Studio owned by Brandon Albus. He opened it up in December of 2019. I specialize in fine line black and grey. I also enjoy tattooing neo-traditional, sacred geometry and anything realistic.

I’m really proud to be apart of Sinners. The owner Brandon did a great job designing the shop and finding a talented artist to work there. I’m in love with the space. I feel like my strong work ethic and positive attitude sets me apart from others. I want to give my clients the best possible experience as soon as they walk in the door from when they walk out. Besides the experience, my designs set me apart. I make sure each design is an original work of art. I want my clients to be proud of the art I put on them.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Having a strong work ethic is one. To be successful in this industry you have to bust your buns. That means working and practicing any chance you get. I’m always hungry for more information. I’m asking other artists questions on how to improve the quality of my work. You have to be able to take criticism and learn from your mistakes as well.

Staying positive is a big one too. A good attitude can take you very far. When people see you having a good time and loving what you do, they’ll be more inclined to come sit in your chair. If your energy is cool, your client’s energy will be cool. Thus making your tattoos cool. It’s simple science.
