Meet Jojo Chuang of Jojo Chuang Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jojo Chuang.

Jojo, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
“Designer is the person who builds dreams for people.” The line from Miyazaki Hayao’s movie “The Wind Rises” strikes me like a lighthouse lighting up the dark. It inspired me when I was searching for the goal and meaning of my path.

My skill set and experiences are unique. I am a creator who grew up in Asia studying fine art and visual communication and acquired my education in the US emphasizing in design culture and hands-on abilities. My skill set opens a wide range of possibilities from custom mural, collectible furniture pieces, customized leather goods, design goods, and even teaching.

However, the most valuable thing for a growing studio in the community. Without the support from the community, my potential can never become a reality. Dallas is a rapidly growing city, and I believe that by uniting the local community, we can become a strong force. Therefore, besides creating wonderful work for my clients, the goal for the studio is to create the bond for the community and help the local creators.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As an immigrant and independent creator, it is difficult to make splashes in the pond. To keep chasing my dream, a strong mentality is a necessity. There were definitely times that make me want to give up. Thanks for the support from friends and family, I am able to keep chasing my dream. This experience reiterates the importance of a healthy and supportive community. Since then, helping create the bond for the local community have never left my mind.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
My practice is project driven and based on two core pillars. One is designed; the other one is art. On the design side, I provide problem-solving service to help realizing clients’ ideas. On the art side, I develop my collections with my unique style for clients. Because of different needs from each client, my work comes in various forms. I find the process of problem-solving enriching my practice and opening up more opportunities for future projects. Therefore, I enjoy communicating with my clients and every challenge presenting by different projects.

One of my recent projects was for Ace Hotel Chicago. The large-scale mural/ space divider design becomes one of the highlights of the hotel. The isometric style mural infuses with Chicago’s landmarks, history, and icons. The mural was designed to be consistent no matter it is stocked on the wall for open space or used as a space divider. This feature showcases the caring of detail in my work.

The collaboration with Sweet Tooth Hotel is my most recent project in Dallas. I developed the Cotton Candy Island and Sweet Tooth Stool as a set for the exhibition. My research of material and design culture helps me create the collectible furniture set with squishy texture mimicking cotton candy corresponding to the subject. After the great success of Sweet Tooth Hotel, I took a more important role to help developing the upcoming exhibition this year for the Sweet Tooth Brand.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me, success is a relative idea and is hard to define. My success is defined by how far can I reach in the art/design world. And for now, I believe I am only at the starting point. There are lots of great adventures awaits in front of my path.
